Cynthia Greig: Challenging Reality

Visual artist Cynthia Greig’s Representations series challenges perception and assumptions in the coolest possible way. Using white paint, charcoal, and a little bit of genius, Greig turns three dimensional scenes into apparent 2-D sketches. They can’t be real, right?

“My work explores the exchange of influence between perception and experience, and the photograph’s role in negotiating what we consider to be real or true. For me, the coexistence of contradictions marks the moment when apparent realities collide… my work investigates how visual information can infiltrate our consciousness, occupy our memories and influence our understanding of the world we live in.”

Her work reminds me very much of my favorite summer happening, the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, where three dimensional people and objects are placed in a frame, painted and lit, and magically turned into famous works of art. It’s incredible how a creativity, perspective, and a little bit of lighting can trick our brains.

I'm a 22 year old synesthete and ex-Midwesterner living in my favorite city in the world, LA. My favorite things are photography, cinematography, french bulldogs, and espresso (not necessarily in that order). I love talking about and experiencing movies and art more than anything else, and I can usually be found exploring the city with my camera in hand.
