The Beauty Chronicles ~ A Strong Foundation

by: Paulette Cooper

A young lady asked for my assistance in her search for “the perfect” foundation. ”No one ever gets it right”, she said. “It’s either too red or too dark.” However, as I further investigated, I came to the conclusion that the issue was her perception. She had a starkingly white highlight under her eyes, and her current foundation was a couple of shades too light. Furthermore, her body was a deeper brown complexion. She repeated several times that she wasn’t used to being this dark and she would lighten up over the next few weeks. She stated she was much lighter when she was younger. My alarm instantly went off! I asked her age and she reluctantly replied, 22. “You’re too beautiful to not love the color of your skin just the way it is, right now in this moment”, I stated. When choosing a foundation we should mimic our natural state and simply perfect it. It’s not about transforming our face or hiding behind a mask.

Challenge yourself with this exercise…Apply your foundation and concealer like you would normally do. Now, remove one side right down the middle. It should not look COMPLETELY different from the other. On the contrary, it should appear refined or polished if you will. I did this with the young lady and showed her how she was taking away from her natural beauty by following the makeup regiment she had grown to accept. I re-matched her to the shade that mirrored her gorgeous olive complexion. As she stared at the image in front of her I warned that it may take a while to embraced the new vision she saw in the mirror. This was the true image, and she may not embrace this image over night. Makeup is all about perception. Some perceptions are good, and unfortunately some are unhealthy and warped. It’s up to us to choose what we view as our true image. Take time to educate yourself on enhancing your personal beauty and let’s strive toward loving the skin that we’re in!
