IS KIM KARDASHIAN A STYLE ICON?

This look is directly inspired by an outfit Kim Kardashian wore a little while ago in Paris. She has been absolutely killing it recently. Some of my favorites include this Chloé look, Balmain look, AWAKE look and Ulyana Sergeenko look. What is clear is that Kimye’s style is drastically different from Kim K’s. Gone are the days of purple, pink and red colour blocked outfits and louboutin daffodil pumps. Now we’re talking blacks, whites and muted tones with some reds thrown in for good measure.

What makes a fashion icon? Rihanna recently won the CFDA fashion icon award. I, personally, would take Kim’s style over Rihanna’s any day. Sure, she kills it sometimes but nipple baring is a concept that I will never be able to cope with and it saddened me that she couldn’t even avoid looking tasteless on the day when she was receiving such a prestigious award. I think she’s a fashion dare devil, as opposed to an icon.

Back to the question- what makes a fashion icon? From a more traditional standpoint, a style icon would be someone who individually comes up with amazing outfits time after time. See: Solange Knowles, the Olsen sisters, Blake Lively, Miroslava Duma. Have we accepted celebrity culture so much that a person can rightfully claim style icon status even though they don’t actually style themselves most of the time? If your best outfits were not your own concept or it took a new man in your life to revolutionize your style, are you really deserving of icon status? I mean, iconic is a big word.

For me, it really has to come from within for the most part. So this means that a person might use a stylist because of their lifestyle but they don’t actually need one. You should still able to tell that they have great personal style on the days when they style themselves.

But what’s to say that Kim’s style hasn’t just evolved and she is not now the mastermind behind most of her looks? That’s a question I don’t have the answer to. What do you think though- is Kim Kardashian-West deserving of icon status? What does iconic mean to you?
