Evey's Donut Shop First Birthday
Our daughter Evey turned one on May 1st. How that happened, I'll never know, but to celebrate her big day we threw a Donut Shop themed party for family and friends, and it was the most fun I've ever had decorating for a party! Although this post is almost a month late, I still wanted to share in case anyone else is looking for donut themed party ideas, and well, it was just too stinkin' cute. I'm pretty sure I enjoyed this more than my own wedding.
I told myself I wasn't gonna go crazy, I was going to keep it simple, "She is only one after all, she won't even remember any of it," but then I made the mistake of turning to Pinterest for first birthday inspiration. Big mistake. There were SO many cute and inspiring ideas and my original plan for a small, minimally decorated party quickly spiraled out of control. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but it definitely took a whole lot more time and effort than I had planned and ya know what, it was worth every second!
The donut idea actually came from my sister initially when she emailed me a link to these free donut printables months before Evey's party with a message that said, "I don't know how you could use these but they're really cute." So after browsing Pinterest for far too long and coming across a donut party or two I remembered the free printables and the whole thing took off from there. I definitely could have gone off the deep end in the budget department but honestly all the decor was super budget friendly and we really didn't spend much at all!
The invitations were bought off of Etsy from this seller and I printed them myself at Office Max. I bought simple kraft paper envelopes from Hobby Lobby and lined them in scrapbook paper, brown with pink and white polka dots. It set the tone nicely.
To first commemorate the birthday girl and add a little wall art to our living room, I printed three photos from each of her monthly photo shoots and used her monthly stickers (purchased off of Etsy) along with a little bakers twine to create this "year of Evey" display.
It was a big hit and I'm just happy to have so many printed photos of her to look back on! (Seriously, it's sad that nobody prints photos anymore!)
Back at the front entry table I laid out all of the cousins' goody bags in simple brown paper bags with scallop cut detail, relating back to the bakery theme, and tied them up with free donut printables and of course, bakers twine. The "runner" is Dollar Tree kraft paper from the gift wrap section.
The mini donuts were bought off of Ebay and placed on a white dish under a thrift store cloche. The gorgeous pink dogwoods are from our front yard and I am so incredibly happy that we will have them in bloom for all of her future birthdays in this home!
Of course you can't have a donut shop without donuts! To create the streamer wall I simply used four different colors of streamers and twisted each 5 times so they were even. In the Ikea frame is another free printable found online and I just hung it right in front of the streamers over our cake donut stands (one is mine and the set of three was borrowed from my sister).
The main focal point of the decor was supposed to be these painted donut balloons but sadly the paint caused the inflated balloons to be too heavy and they would not stay afloat! Rather than scrap the idea completely we tied them as close to the base as possible to the birthday girl's chair as well as the bookcases in our living room.
In the kitchen I carried the donut theme into the smallest of details like these Donut Shop K-Cups. I don't even own a Keurig but when I saw these K-Cups I had to have them and borrowed a Keurig from a friend. It wound up being one of my favorite parts of all the decor!
As far as the birthday girl's outfit, she was after all the owner of a donut shop so she had to have an apron! After browsing different options on Etsy and recovering from sticker shock, I got in touch with my crafty side and made her an apron out of a plain canvas bag, added a little pocket, and trimmed it all out with simple ric rac ribbon. The whole thing cost $2.
So that's it for our baby girl's first birthday! It was so much fun incorporating the theme into just about every room of our home and hopefully she'll appreciate it when she gets older. Either way, the adults had a great time.
