Music is a huge part of my writing process. I wouldn’t get past the first page without it. For me, it inspires everything from wicked fight scenes, to those gut-wrenching tear-your-heart-out moments.

My books all have playlists. Most scenes have at least one song tied to them inside my head. And sometimes, a character is so vivid to me, they get their own. In the case of Jessie Darker, one of the main characters from the Darker Agency series, the list practically made itself! Here are a few of the songs from Jessie Darker’s soundtrack.

Marilyn Manson – Personal Jesus

Jessie is a good person. She loves that the agency helps people in trouble—even if her moral compass is sometimes just slightly askew. In her eyes, the agency is the thing that stands between the things that go bump in the night and the good people of Penance. She and Klaire are the self appointed saviors of their beloved hometown.

Christina Perri – Human

Jessie is one tough cookie. She’s faced down creatures from the deepest depths of the Shadow Realm—AKA Hell—without even breaking a sweat. But she’s also a teenage girl. Even if she isn’t 100% human. There’s a scene in Book one where she says she wants Lukas to see her as more than a Monster Masher. She wants him to see her as a girl. This theme is carried throughout the series, the song playing a prominent role in a scene from book two as well. To me, it screams vulnerability. Sure, Jessie can kick ass with the best of them, but she’s also just a girl. One who, like everyone else, has limits and a breaking point.

Imagine Dragons – Radioactive

This one is on Jessie’s list because she’s a fighter. She gets up, pushes on, and does what needs to be done despite the challenges and obstacles in her path. Everyone hears music in their own way. To me, this is all about the fight. Getting the job done and overcoming the struggle.
