Q&A: Eometrie Handmade

1. How did you get your start in designing jewelry?

I majored in Sculpture, and while in school I mostly worked with wood. Large scale installations and structural pieces were my forte, but after graduation I started traveling extensively, and I no longer had access to a big studio or woodshop. In order to keep creating, I looked for a way to work small. I’ve always loved jewelry – I’ll often wear a plain tee and black jeans paired with layered necklaces and big earrings to make a low-effort outfit. So I started making little wooden shapes that I could wear as earrings, and that’s where my brand got started.

2. What inspires you to create?

I’ve been traveling a lot over the past four years. Long periods of time spent in Nepal, the Pacific Northwest, Peru, Alaska, and the Southwest United States have provided me with rolls upon rolls of 35mm film. Looking back at my photos gets my into my studio groove: the colors and shapes in both nature and culture are a launching point for most of my designs.

3. What do you love about working with the materials you use?

Wood is a bit unconventional for jewelry, which keeps things exciting. It also makes designing a challenge… soldering is not possible on my wood pieces, so instead I have to come up with creative and attractive ways to make cold connections. Working with metal is challenging in a different way, but I love that it’s shapable, while my wood pieces must remain flat.

4. Do you have a favorite piece you have made ?

Right now I’m loving the bronze Baihni Cuff. It was my first cuff bracelet design, and pushed me in a new direction that I’m eager to run with. It’s also a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down, which is a quality I always value.

5. Describe your style aesthetic.

Boyish, simple, black on black on black.

6. Any current obsessions you would like to share?

Cacti, green tea, and Dusen Dusen.

7. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

To persistently put myself out there.

8. What is the one jewelry piece you think is a “must-have” for every women?

An everyday necklace. Something that can be thrown on to spice up a simple boy tee for an easy outfit.

9. Any advice you would like to give to aspiring jewelry designers?

Don’t sell yourself short- you can find a way make anything you want.

10. Any exciting designing plans for 2013?

Well, I’ve got exciting travel plans… and those usually end up inspiring exciting designs. Some possible collaborations are on the horizon as well… you’ll have to wait and see!
