George Nelson exhibition @ The Powerhouse Museum, Sydney

Last weekend Adam and I headed up to Sydney to celebrate our anniversary. I'll be sharing some photos from our trip a little later in the week, but first I wanted to share a couple of (poor quality iPhone) snaps I took at the George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum. I read about this exhibition a little while ago, and it was high up on the list of things I wanted to do when I was in town. George Nelson was an influential figure in American design during the second half of the twentieth century, and the retrospective (an exhibition of the Vitra Design Museum in Germany) explores his work as a leading designer and architect, as well as a prominent author, editor, lecturer, exhibition designer and photographer.

As design director of Herman Miller, Nelson had a major influence on the product line and public image of the company for over two decades, and collaborated with many of the iconic designers of the era, from Charles and Ray Eames to Alexander Girard. For me, the furniture was the main highlight here, with pieces like the coconut chair, swaged-leg home desk, comprehensive storage system and modular sofa on display, along with a whole collection of clocks and other fabulous desks and chairs. Another highlight for me was the collection of colourful Herman Miller catalogues - such great examples of beautiful and undated graphic design.

It's not a huge exhibition, but if you're in Sydney between now and January 2014 I'd definitely recommend checking it out (on a sidenote, the whole Powerhouse Museum is really fun and also worth taking a look at!). For exhibition details visit the Powerhouse website.
