Merry Christmas Eve, the Musical Edition

A and I are on our flight, heading to New Orleans. By the time you read this, we may have even made our way from the airport to our hotel in the French Quarter. This is the first time we’ve ever not been in New York for Christmas since I first moved here in 1992.

I can’t quite tell you what made us decide that this was the year to start traveling for holidays, but it’s felt right. So right, in fact, that we’re already looking at destinations for Easter.

San Francisco seems to be the running favorite.

While we were getting ready yesterday morning, I saw this video of “Hallelujah” by Cloverton and it got us talking about what some of our favorite Christmas songs are and why.

“A Hallelujah Christmas” by Cloverton from Ross Wooten on Vimeo.

After watching the video, we thought we’d share them with you since we we’re not able to sing them to you in person. It’s not that we can’t sing them to you, it’s that we probably shouldn’t.

We had to start with Mariah, no last name needed, because this is the song that will get us to stop what we’re doing, no matter where we are, and forget that we’re not singers.

After watching that video, and wishing we had bunnies and a puppy like Mariah, I asked A what else we should include, in order we agreed to the following:

A says that this song by John Lennon makes her happy. It’s nice to imagine that one day we’ll wake up there won’t be wars or hatred separating us from each other. Until that day, we’ll take John Lennon lyrics over most things in life.

Of course, we had to add the Temptations version of “Silent Night” because this is the Christmas song that got my mom in the Christmas spirit every year before she died. She would put on her Temptations Christmas album and cook up a big pot of gumbo or fry a ton of chicken and we’d feast like we were Royals, shout out to Lorde.

A and I agreed that if I was going to add the Temptations, then we had to include my girl, Stevie Nicks’ version of the same song because it is truly one of my favorite songs performed by my favorite artist in the universe. Any universe.

Here’s where we got a little more serious. Did we add George Michael twice, once with Wham and once with Band Aid? Yes, yes indeed. We love him that much. If you’re a fan of his you really can’t have too much of his voice. It’s impossible.

We thought we’d wrap it up with a little Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, with a big heavenly shout out to Clarence Clemons. I’m sure heaven sounds awesome with you up there keeping the rhythm section going.

And that’s it. Our Christmas playlist. We’d love to hear about your favorite songs so send us your list and we’ll add them to next year’s Christmas countdown! Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates the holiday. For everyone else, the happiest thoughts from us to you – next up, a teddy bear arrives in #NOLA. The story of how Fuzzy the Bear made his New Orleans debut.
