Gen. Colin L. Powell on Leadership…

I haven’t dedicated a lot of space on this blog to video, even though I keep threatening to begin making my own and document the entire “What We’re Cooking Sundays” extravaganza that is, well, each Sunday.

I also haven’t spent a lot of time writing about work in this space. I’ve never tried to separate my blog from my life because they are one in the same. All of my friends know that I work for one of the best organizations, ever and consult for one of the other best. And yet I rarely write about it. I often wonder if I should change that and I think that today’s video share is a step in the right direction.

The work of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at the City College of New York is transformative. Period.

A couple of months ago I sent an email to my boss to say that two of the Powell Fellows were at an event I was managing and as I listened to them mingle with total strangers, including the 1%, what they said made it evident that the work they did, the things they learned, the people they are and will become, is in part due to the programs that were run by the Colin Powell Center. When we inaugurating the Colin Powell School last May, we brought together the division of social sciences and the leadership, training and internship programs of the Center. What has happened is, quite literally, magic. There is a sense of the importance of ‘getting this right’ and it makes us,, each of us who are involved, more motivated each day.

I’m posting this video not just because it’s Black History Month and not just because this is a reflection of where I work and with whom I work. I’m posting it because anyone who doesn’t feel passionate about how public education can change a nation has forgotten the importance of nurturing people to grow into their own destiny.

“If not now, when?”
