A DIY Shirt With a Special Touch

I am so excited about this project. As soon as I finished I texted a picture to my mom and my friend and anyone who would listen.

Now let me start by saying how blessed I was to invited out to Utah to meet the fine people at Cricut and get a sneak peek at the new Cricut |explore. Crazy inspirational. I was dying to get my hands on a machine. In a way it is almost overwhelming, because there is so much this machine can do. I didn’t even know where to start. I want to make everything!!

As soon as I got my log-ins for Design Space (still in Beta mode), I had to make something. I was a kid at Christmas.

This machine is a beauty! It is quiet, intuitive and really easy to use. It does everything you could ever ask of in a cutting machine and so much more. Whatever you think you know about Cricut, throw it out. The CEO, Ashish Arora, there is taking this company places you couldn’t imagine and he is truly inspirational. The machine itself is sleek, with built in storage and comes with a carrying case. It cuts quietly, precisely and over 50 different materials!

There are three ways, or a hybrid of three ways to create using the Cricut|explore. First, You can do a “make it now” project, which takes you from inspiration to creation in just a few clicks. The second, is creating your own project using the image gallery. Lastly, you can create using your own files you upload. You can create using one, two or all three of these methods.

I’m dying to create. I have nothing. I must create now. Suddenly, I remember the plain shirts I had picked up at Target for Quinn on clearance.

I also have a sample sheet of iron on vinyl that came with my machine. I decided to create a shirt for Quinn using two methods. The hello name tag graphic is from the Cricut image library. I knew I wanted to make it custom and special, because that is the whole point of having a Cricut|explore. That is the whole point of making a shirt.

I had Quinn write his name.

Then I had the hubs turn that into a file for me to import. If people are interested, I can have him write a post about how to do that. I am married to a graphic designer so I passed it off to him.

I uploaded that file and placed his name into the name tag. Then I put the Cricut|explore to work cutting. Look how thin it cut!!

I threw a towel over that and held the iron on it for 45 seconds or so. I peeled back the plastic and then got really giddy.

Shut the front door! There it was, my little boy’s 5-year-old handwriting right there on his shirt.

I’m addicted. Everything I own is going to be covered in vinyl. I already have another project started! I just need to order more vinyl.

I don’t know why Quinn has suddenly switched to capital N’s, but I love the way it adds character. I love the imperfect way he writes his name. Let me tell you, he was so proud to wear this shirt too.

So tell me, what would you put on a shirt?

Hi, I'm Megan--the crazy mom of three behind this blog. Please don't be intimidated by the name. Note it doesn't say BALANCED Home. We hardly have it all together, but together we have it all. Or at least that is what I tell myself. I love rearranging, decorating, creating, crafting, celebrations, family, and holidays. I share a little bit of all of that and more on Balancing Home. I am married to my college sweetheart (Is that a thing? Well now it is.) and he is a very talented designer. I use him for his skills so I can offer up sweet printables to all of you.
