Makeup Wars My Favorite Black Eye Liner feat. Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner

This week for Makeup Wars we’re tackling our Favorite Black Eye Liner. This is probably the broadest topic ever in the history of MUW. For this post I have four eye liners to share with you, with the focus being on the newest and possibly the most controversial liner. Of course I’m talking about the new Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner. Some people are calling it a God-send, others are saying it’s gimmicky. Some are singing it’s praises, some are saying it’s junk. I’m about to break it down for you and then also shout out to a few of my other faves.

I actually got to purchase Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner early off of their wait list, but didn’t get around to using it until it had released in all of the stores. Reviews were mixed and even MUA’s inside of Sephora and Ulta were telling me it took them 3 days to get the hang of it. I’m all like, 3 days WTF I don’t want this. Then I left mad that I even bought it before I played in store. On the advice of those MUA’s I did a simple eye (which you can see below) and waited until I had time to mess with it and I had no where to be. You can get familiar with the AccuFlex tip before you open the box by checking out the back and sides of the packaging.

The tip is really interesting. It comes with a stopper inside so that it’s completely fresh for when you purchase. You have to twist at the bottom end quite a bit (IME) to get the initial burst of product but after that it comes out without any issue. The tip is made from silicone and is really flexible, making it easy to maneuver. You’re either going to love that or hate it. I personally loved it because I didn’t feel like it took as much effort to apply the liner as it does with an actual angled brush.

I got quite a bit of product upon first swipe (left), which told me when I went to put this on my eyes that I needed to work from the outside in-ward. I criss-crossed (right) my leftovers and as you can see, still a lot of product to work your way to the inner corner. Get a little more product up for the wing and you’re done!

Below is my first attempt with the Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner. While it’s a little thicker than what I was going for I thought it turned out quite well, especially for the first time. For the eye look I just used a base of a Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creamy Beige and a dusting of a light and shimmery beige eye shadow from the Maybelline Nudes Palette (all to be reviewed). When you’re finished made sure you close the cap tightly.

All of that being said I feel like if you’re very comfortable with this type of eye look and gel liner you’ll probably be okay. You absolutely cannot run head-first into this liner and think on your first try you can just swipe your eye and it’s going to be the biz-nass. It’s a new thing and practice makes perfect. Once you’ve used it a few times, as with any new-to-you product, you’ll absolutely be able to do your cat-eye faster.

Another black eye liner that I love is NARS Carpates Eyeliner Stylo. It’s a black pen liner that applies in a perfect, saturated black line

The final two liners that I love come from Urban Decay. I mean, really, how can you make a post about black eye liners and not talk about Urban Decay? If I wouldn’t have went with the Benefit liner as my choice I would have picked the Urban Decay Perversion Super-Saturated Ultra Intense Waterproof Cream Eyeliner. I heart this so much. It dries as a flat black and looks much like Benefit They’re Real when worn. It’s creamy and stays all day long. A must-have. The second one from Urbay Decay was a sample that I received in a past ipsy bag. The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Black Velvet is one of my faves because it dries flat and is easy to apply. It’s not as in your face as Perversion but it’s got a little more oomph than Zero.

What black eye liner is your fave?
