Fashion Week for the Every Girl, Part Two
I feel like if fashion week had a tag line it would be somewhere along the lines of 'it is what it is.' In the best way possible of course; in a this is what I am wearing because I like it kind of way. Carefree but well thought out style. I'm always amazed to see what trends emerge each year that show a constancy through different lines or the trends that come completely out of the blue. I also love to remember past trends that I had immediate disapproving feelings towards and then I later found myself liking and even wearing them.
I think sometimes we want art to be relatable, fashion to be wearable or better yet affordable. (Best yet, in fact.) And if it isn't any of those things then we toss it to the side by saying 'oh, it's just not for me.' But I think that a lot of lessons can be learned by looking at runway and street style fashions as more than just aspiration, but instead inspiration that you can actually use in your own closet. So I've pulled a few of my favorite looks from the runway to the streets from this past week that can easily translate into your closet or budget right now. Shall we take a look?

From wide leg to cropped to culottes (oh yes, my friends culottes) I saw them all and I was estatic. I feel like pants have been needing a comeback for a while and I love all of the ways to wear them this fall and next spring. One big trend I saw was a cuffed trousers which is quite a departure from the classic skinny pant silhouette. Very classic, put together and office friendly. I also love the different textures and tops that were paired with the trousers, there was no one way that a top was paired with a certain trouser. Cropped, loose, tailored -- they all work. (If you are set on trousers, try pairing a different top you'd normally go for or a try dramatic cuff at the hem. Easily changes your look of what you already have.)

Pale pink, you guys. It's here and it's staying for fall and I could not be happier. Former Disney princesses everywhere are rejoicing at this trend. (Me included, although my princess title was revoked years ago.) Easiest way to bring it into fall? Pair it with black. Of course you can go many different routes with this hue -- burgundy, red, marigold, navy, emerald, cobalt blue. But black will always do the trick. Have light pink hiding in your closet from past seasons? Perfect, you are already ahead of the game.

Obviously the idea of layering for fall is not groundbreaking here but I love thinking about the different ways to layer other than just throwing on a jacket or blazer and calling it done. I love the idea how the first and last image (clockwise) show different lengths and proportions that I'm not typically drawn to trying. I also love the mix of structured silhouettes so that the layering and untucking is intentional and not just messy. And of course the layering with a lady like touch -- a sweater over the shoulders or perfectly tucked cardigan. Classic pieces but they somehow look so refreshed.

I love the comeback of the trench as a vest. I've seen this trend around before but it makes so much sense for fall as a layered on piece, especially as a tailored vest. The best way to wear this trend is over a sleeveless (or short sleeved) dress just to give yourself some fall layers without having to wear a jacket all day. Layers always complete a look. I also saw the mix of flowy and tailored when it comes to the trench. Flowy fabrics or silhouette but with a definite tied waist. All good options for fall and early spring. (Also I just had this thought: if you have an old trench and like the look of the sleeveless vest, you could easily DIY this trend. Cut off the sleeves, hem the edges and VIOLA! You've got yourself a new vest. I can't cut a straight line so I will not be attempting this DIY myself.)

I love the comeback of the trench as a vest. I've seen this trend around before but it makes so much sense for fall as a layered on piece, especially as a tailored vest. Gingham was all over the place (in a good way) at fashion week for spring. And although it is typically a springtime print, I like the look of it for fall, especially in dark color combinations. So keep a look out for this print next spring, but introduce it early this fall and reuse those pieces next year, too. Being early on a trend is never a bad thing, especially when you can reuse your favorite pieces year round. Now that's just being smart.

As I was style watching (this replaces 'people watching' when you are at fashion week), I was constantly amazed at how good some people are at mismatching. So good in fact that they actually end up matching. I think the key to a good mis-match fest is to keep the colors complementary, so that even if your patterns, textures, accessories or shoes are a little different (or a lot) you've still got a theme. Or you can just not think so hard, wear what you want and call it a day. I'm down for that, too.

There is a heavy theme with street style: wear who you are. Props to the girl who looks effortless in a nike sports bra all the way to the stylish lady in a classic button down and lace pencil skirt. It just goes to show that style always expresses who you are without saying a word.
