The Devynes do The Four Doctors #doctorwhosewalong
Can I just say a huge thank you to everyone who's been sending me emails, pics and links to their Doctor Who Sew Along creations, they are truly fantastic......and I'll be posting the full round up and lots of links tomorrow.
For all those of you who've commented that you would have liked to have joined in, or some of you who found Fanbloomingtastic and the sew along too late.....never fear, check back tomorrow.......
In the meantime, I ought to post about my makes.
I had planned to do a couple of Doctor Who themed dresses (goodness knows I need some autumnal frocks) but rebuilding the kitchen got in the way of sewing time (posts on the kitchen remodel to come soon too). So instead, I concentrated on making, refashioning and thrifting costumes for the whole family for us to wear to the 3D Day of the Doctor at a nearby cinema. You'll have seen some blurry pics from the night on my Instagram account but here's some we did at a photoshoot and details of the makes.
So in order of Doctors.....
Tempest - the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee)
I've already said that I was a bit sad that my first Doctor, the 3rd, was under-represented in the 50th Anniversary, but as you'll see tomorrow that Mr. Pertwee gets plenty enough representation, and not just in human (or alien) form.....teasey tease. But here's mine:
Made items for costume: Frilly ruffled shirt adapted from McCalls 5929 and 6035, 70s style bowtie using McCalls Crafts 2449.
Items adapted for costume: Blue velvet jacket (thrifted) - burgundy wool bias tape made and lapels etc edged.
Already owned items: black dress trousers, grey cowboy boots. blonde wig.
Annoyingly, when I made my Sherlock Inverness Cape last year, I chose the fabric specifically so it could double as one of Pertwee's......and then I forgot to wear it for the photoshoot. But if i cosplay this again, and it's winter, I'll wear the Inverness Cape too...and look a bit like this:
And yes, the completely nerdy amongst you (us), might have worked out the significance of that 'monster' we're seen utilising in some of the photos.....I wanted to find something akin to
Made items for costume: scarf knitted for Mr D's 50th - details here, red silk cravat using McCalls Crafts 2449, waistcoat/vest from a tablecloth from Goodwill charity shop using McCalls Easy Stitch 'n Save 6149.
Items bought from thrift stores: Grey tweed wide-leg trousers, brown plaid/tweed jacket, brown felt cowboy hat that we beat into a floppier shape.
Already owned items: white shirt, black ankle boots, brown long wig....Jelly babies.
The biggest success of this whole sew along is that waistcoat. GC loves it and has worn it to school numerous times.....and wants me to make her more in different colours.
Oh and that wig.....we all hate it, but we couldn't find a brown short curly wig that wasn't an afro in our price range and I had that cheapo shiny one already. If you know us or follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you'll know GC's hair is currently pink and pixie cut. This is her currently....so the wig was her choice to hide unDoctorlike neon hair.
She looks fab and totally got into the role of the 4th Doctor, wants to watch more of his adventures and was VERY EXCITED watching The Day of the Doctor (we both screamed with delight at the surprise).
But the person who got the most love/attention at the movie screening from other Doctor Who fans was predictably our little Doctor....
Melchett as the 10th Doctor (David Tennant)
If ever there was a person who you could tell exactly what they're like from their photos, it's our Melchie....and if ever there was a more suited person to play the 10th Doctor other than David Tennant, erm, basically.....run (yes, I know that's Christopher Ecclestone's line originally, but imagine any of photoshoots where a small someone is constantly running around in the background because she can't stay still):
The really observant long-term readers of Fanbloomingtastic will notice her hair is no longer blonde. This is half due to commitment to role and half to the fact Melchett is having trouble at school with some girls and one of the things happening is picking on her appearance, in particular calling her previous hair colour 'dirty blonde'......so after some begging on her part we've dyed it a chestnuty brown that she loves and is still acceptable to her elementary school. Kids eh, they can be really nasty.....but that's another tale for another day.
Made items for costume: refashioned women's suit from Goodwill thrift store.
Items bought from thrift stores: Shirt and tie.
Already owned items: she stole my red converse....yep, my 11 year old daughter has the same size feet as me....none of my shoes are safe anymore.
Blimey, refashioning this brown pin-stripe suit which I think was a size 8 ladies jacket and size 6 trousers took nearly a month or trial and error and then success. Here's David Tennant as the Doctor, the look we were trying to recreate:
And here's her in the suit before alterations, she's pretty tall for her age but still wears kids large/age 12 clothes......she's still too small and thin for even women's XS:
For the jacket, I took out the lining, took off the sleeves, undid the side seams, cut excess from the side seams to make it more fitted for her size, cut larger arm syches so the sleeve shoulder joins would sit on her shoulder, took the sleeves in and up, and gathered and adjusted the top of the sleeve to fit the new armhole size.
For the trousers, I opened up the back centre seam and cut a triangle of excess fabric from it, I made two darts on the front waistband and took the crotch up....and cut and rehemmed the length of the trousers to the length she wanted....though personally I think they're a little half-mast/short, but she wanted people to see her converse....I mean, my converse.
She had so much fun as the Doctor, especially with her newer/older version,
Mr D as the 11th and current Doctor (Matt Smith)
I probably made the least stuff for Mr. D's costume. Just the fez and a thin version of the bow tie I made myself for the 3rd Doctor.

Full-price new item bought: red braces/suspenders from Hot Topic.
Already owned items: white/burgundy striped shirt.
This is the 3rd fez I've made now, and though it's the best quality one I've made (lined inside in leopard print).....I feel it's still a bit too boxy in shape and a little too short....and 4th one is calling me to make it.
So there you go.....the Devynes do the Four Doctors. We have to say we were very surprised at being in a minority of people in costume out of about the 2000 viewing The Day of the Doctor at our cinema (most people were in Doctor Who t-shirts), and an even smaller minority of group cos-players......I don't know if we were the only family in costume at our cinema but people did appreciate us, including wanting to have their picture taken with us. Melchett was beaten to cutest Doctor there though by a teeny tiny 11th Doctor.

What do you reckon, should we have one of these as our Christmas card photo and confuse all those people who don't know we're Doctor Who fans and think I've permed and bleached my hair? Nah....
