Bikram Yoga Blog Week 3 & 4: Girl Does Yoga

In 2014, I want only one thing for my yoga practice: To be consistent.

No crazy goals or challenges for me: I just want to go Bikram yoga 3-5 times a week. That’s it. I enjoy other people’s exercise and health blogs (like Lin’s marathon updates), I thought it’d be fun to write a weekly yoga practice update.

So, in the Bikram Yoga Blog – Girl Does Yoga series I want to write about how that’s going. If you’re into that sort of thing, more after the jump.

WEEK 3 I was busy, so I did one yoga class as well as another Pilates Reformer session in between appointments. Man, I love Pilates Place Rotterdam. Helga is such a sweetheart, I feel very at home there, and the classes are killing — in a good way.

No other exercise, except cycling to work and running from floor to floor for meetings. Busy burns calories, too.

PILATES I need to start robbing small banks (or countries) if I want to financially sustain Bikram Yoga AND Pilates classes, so I decided to look around for some free classes online.

Now before you suggest it to me, I personally just CANNOT with Blogilates videos. I really like her blog but I break out in Hysteria Hives as soon as that woman opens her mouth in her videos. However, I found

this one and I really like it. Cassie’s very subdued in comparison to some of her other videos. I did about half of it* and could really feel it too. Any other suggestions for free Pilates classes on-line are welcome.

WEEK 4 CLASS 1 On Wednesday I got so frustrated there were no good yoga blogs I really needed to do a class to calm down (after writing this blog) To my great joy…YOGA BOY WAS THERE. We’ll get to that later.

Sitting next to each other on our mats waiting for class to start, I remarked that I’ve mostly been going to the 06:30 AM classes so Yoga Boy grinned. “This class is going to feel like Christmas then.” He was right. When I do yoga in the morning I am usually pretty stiff when I start, but when I’ve been warming up my muscles all day long I can get deeper into the postures.

I had a great class. I know Yoga Boy gives me shit if I flake out so I only took one break when I really needed it and did the rest of the postures to the best of my ability.

Lydia, the studio’s owner taught the class and at the end of the class she said: “When you do a yoga class here, you get a bit of everything. You get your cardio, your strength training, and maybe even a little therapy.” I thought that was cute. Good thing to keep in mind to motivate you.

WEEK 4 CLASS 2 I still felt the effects of the class I had done the day before. Mark was teaching and it was an easy-going relaxed class before work.

WEEK 4 CLASS 3. I took a class early in the morning. It was a good class, Nathy gave good instructions and I felt super energetic afterwards.

PICTURE TIME. Fun fact: I thought it would be nice to blowdry my hair and put on a little make-up before getting my yoga pictures taken, completely forgetting about the fact the yoga room is FORTY DEGREES CELCIUS. I was sweaty and gross before we even started.

Taking the pictures was a lot of fun! I’d show Nathy the pose I wanted to do, he’d give some extra instructions for better technique and he would then take the picture. If you want to see more of them, click here.

LOOK EVERYBODY IT’S YOGA BOY! After my 06:30 class I went over to de Koekela to have coffee with Ben, also known as “Yoga Boy” also known as “I go to yoga 5 times a week and I never have any mental fuckery going on about it either” also known as “TEACH ME HOW TO BE LIKE YOU.”

It was great catching up, and I just adore the guy. He’s so fun and friendly, plus very inspiring. He is a great yogi in the complete opposite way that I am. He’s very strong, all strength and focus and disciplined, I’m just a little limber thing. Maybe I’ll make him guest post. You’ll like him. He’s wicked funny.

WEEK 5? Working on it! I have a lot going on with teaching, preparing a guest lecture and other work activities, but I’m betting on the weekend for this week…as well as taking another class at Forty Degrees tomorrow!

I need to accompany Manfriend for a thing in the evening so I’m going to Amsterdam with him in the morning and spend the day in Amsterdam, throw in some yoga and coffee. Huub is teaching, praise all the postures in the history of yoga.

OK BYE.

*I’m too easily distracted to finish a whole video.
