It's A Potty Party!

Considering the fact that Gavin turns 4 in just a month, Lennie and I decided that we would just bite the bullet and tackle potty training with him. It's something we have not been looking forward to because anytime we even mention "big boy undies" he freaks out. He has sensory processing disorder so the change from the texture of diapers to underpants is a difficult one for him. We figured that in order for him to be on board with this transition, we had to make it over the top fun and exciting.

That is where the fabulous Allison from Madison Design Studio comes in. I had an idea to throw Gavin a Potty Party, but after searching etsy I couldn't find a darn thing. She is just so lovely that she whipped up this adorable printable party package for me.

When it came to prizes, snacks and drinks...pretty much: You name it and I bought it. I was willing to try anything and everything to get him into this potty thing.

I picked up all his favorite salty snacks to encourage him to drink lots of fluids so he would get plenty of opportunities to practice going potty on his Elmo potty.

I also got a bunch of different kinds of candies for prizes. He is slightly obsessed with skeletons and zombies so I headed to the Halloween section of Target to get him thinks that were special and out of the ordinary. Confession: we feed our kids candy all the time {usually as a bribe of some sort} so the candy needed to be something he would actually be excited about.

Part of the Potty Party package includes a chart to track success. This was really fun because we were able to set a goal for each row of success. We chose things like You Tube screen time {he loves to watch cho cho train shows}, dinner at Chuck E. Cheese, a trip to Disneyland {we have passes}, popsicles, ice cream cones, etc.

I thought that the special candies would be his go to treat for potty successes, but turns out these inexpensive little toys were his favorite. He was obsessed with the army guys which is funny because I just bought him a package of them last week and they are all over the house. Go figure.

While Potty Training has not gone as smoothly as we had hoped, we have had some great successes. In the first week we went to the grocery store, the Angel's baseball game and Disneyland with no accidents while we were out. After 2 number twos in his undies we finally got one in the potty. Today has been 1 week and after numerous accidents today, he went pee pee 3 times in a row on his own with no help or prompting.
I am really hoping that this is a sign that things are clicking for him and that I will be doing less laundry very soon!
