DIY Chalkboard Wood Sign

DIY Chalkboard Wood Sign

For this week’s Silhouette Saturday, I’m showing you how easy it is to create professional-looking chalk art. First we’ll make a reusable wood chalkboard sign. I love this because all you have to do it erase the design and change it for the next season/holiday!

Here are the supplies you’ll need to make one:

Start by painting your wood with the Chalkboard Paint. I did two coats, allowing the first to dry before applying the second. Once it’s dry, season the chalkboard surface by rubbing chalk all over it and then wiping it off. I attached a wire hanger to the back of the sign at this point for hanging.

Next, select your design and open it in the Silhouette Studio software, on a 12×24 page size. I used this Merry & Bright design from the Silhouette Design Store.

Tape two sheets of scrapbook paper together to form a long 12×24 sheet and place it on your cutting mat (tape on the back side). Cut and weed your design. Lightly spray the back of your stencil and all interior pieces (like letter centers) with the Respositionable Adhesive (I use Krylon Easy-Tack). Allow to dry one minute and then apply to the chalkboard sign.

Tip: I buy packs of cheap scrapbook paper for stenciling off the clearance racks at Hobby Lobby. I usually get a 20 sheet pack for under $5!

Sharpen your chalk with the pencil sharper and simply begin filling in the stencil, re-sharpening as needed. I used white chalk for the text and green and red chalk for the holly.

After it’s all filled in carefully remove the stencil so as not to erase any of your artwork! The Silhouette hook is really handy for removing small stencil pieces. Touch up anywhere necessary with the chalk by hand. Then gently blow away excess chalk residue.

Now just hang and enjoy!

After Christmas, I’ll erase it and replace with a new design!

Happy creating!
