Hoodies & Hijabs

Sorry for the lack of updates but believe me things have been crazy at work and in life. Im working on launching a new social media channel for work, trying to organize some bone marrow drives in the Bay Area for a friend, and juggling a million other things. On top of all that theres been some really disturbing things going on in the news that Im sure (or at least I hope) most people are familiar with. While I enjoy my fair share of writing about fashion trends, posting pictures in pretty outfits, and sharing make-up tips I felt it was important to take a moment to address these tragic events.Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old African-American high school student who was shot and killed by a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain. Trayvon was found unarmed with only a bag of skittles and an ice tea. His killers name is George Zimmerman. When the cops arrived Zimmerman claimed he killed Trayvon in self-defense so he wasnt arrested or given a drug/alcohol test. Geralod Rivera commented that Trayvons hoodie was to blame because it reminded people of criminals. Geraldo stated that "Ill bet you money, if he didnt have that hoodie on, that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldnt have responded in that violent and aggressive way." Travyon is dead at 17.Shaima Al Awadi was a 32-year-old Iraqi-American Muslim woman who was brutally beaten to death in her own home after someone broke in. Next to her body, in a pool of her own blood, her daughter found a note that read "Go back to your country, you terrorist." Shaima was rushed to the hospital where doctors didnt expect her to live. She was pulled off of life support on Saturday. Nobody has been arrested for her murder yet. Shaima was the mother of 5 children.Trayvon and Shaima both died because of hate, prejudice, racism, bigotry, and ignorance. The saddest part about these stories is that theyre not the only ones. All over the country people are wearing hoodies and hijabs (or scarves around their necks) in remembrance of Trayvon and Shaima. Im praying that out of these tragedies well all be able to stand up for justice. Justice for Travyon, justice for Shaima, and justice for all the unnamed victims of hate in this country and all over the world.Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiunTWITTER | FACEBOOK | BLOGLOVIN
