Valentine’s Day getaway ideas

So I may be a subscriber to the idea that you show your love year-round rather than on one day mid-February.

I may also cynically view Valentine’s Day as a false construct, set up for commercial gain in the lull after Christmas and before Easter eggs start rolling on to the shelves.

But, come February 14th, I will still smile at a soppy message in a pinky-red card, and I will still appreciate being given a gift, even an unimaginative one. Because it’s never not nice to be treated, or reminded you’re loved.

And if we stop being cynical for a moment, there is value in V-day.

The value is in clearing your diaries for a few hours – or even a few days if you’re lucky – and spending some quality time together.

Here are my ideas on where to go for a romantic getaway.

The Peacock at Rowsley

The former dower house of Haddon Hall, one of Derbyshire’s finest stately homes, has been given a modern twist to create this boutique hotel. Not far from Chatsworth House, this is where the cast of Pride and Prejudice stayed while filming. My brother and I booked my mum and dad in for a couple of nights as a present; I was pretty envious handing over the envelope at Christmas. Doubles from £155.

Ox Pasture Hall, North Yorkshire

If you’re looking for a country retreat, Ox Pasture Hall could hardly be prettier. Set in 17 acres of picturesque grounds, it has stunning views of the North Yorkshire Moors. Pet friendly too! You can’t forget your furry loved ones, can you? A classic double on Valentine’s Day night costs £149.

The Bull Hotel, Dorset

If you’re in the South, take a look at this former coaching inn in Bridport, West Dorset. I’m always impressed if there’s a bath in the bedroom, even though I know it’s pretty impractical in real life. The Bull is favoured for its food, and the Valentine’s Day menu is mouthwatering. Doubles from £85.

Ragdale Hall

If you can get your other half to go to a spa with you, I envy you. If mine ever decides it wouldn’t be an affront to his manhood, Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire would probably be my top choice. Their two-night break in February and March costs from £340, including meals, champagne and a treatment.

Glamping

You know I’m a huge camping fan, and some of the most romantic and fun moments husband and I have shared have been after pitching our tent, so I couldn’t make a list without including it. Is camping possible in February? I think we should at least try. Maybe go for a permanent tent with woodburning stove, yurt, hut, or retro or gypsy caravan. There are loads of sites now around the country offering this type of break. With plenty of blankets, what could be cosier?

Silverlake House, Lake District

It’s a bit pricier, but it’s so beautifully decorated I had to include Silverlake House near Coniston in Cumbria. The cottage costs £635 for a three-night stay for two people.
