Find a new route

My running routes are really boring. Twice a week when I run after work while my son is at whatever sports practice, it’s a boring neighborhood route. Out and back, avoiding driveways and over rough sidewalks. The same general route. Every. Single. Time.

Usually at that time of day, I listen to music while I run and just tune everything out and go.

I didn’t realize it was boring until Sunday when I lucked into a new route.

I lucked into running in a different place. I had a hour and I did a little bit of pre-planning using MapMyRun.com on my computer before I left. My plan was to go 2 miles out and back and then possibly do it a second time.

I had gone about 1.5 miles when I got to the guard gate of the adjacent city to where I started. There was a sign that pedestrians had to check in with the guard. So, I did. It was a quiet area and he saw me coming, so it wasn’t like I could have snuck by anyway. Imagine my surprise when he told me that I needed a permit to run in the community. Really? He said it was for liability reasons. Weird, but I guess they get to make their own rules.

So, I turned around and went back to the last main intersection and turned a new direction. I knew where I was in theory, but I didn’t know that there was an amazing hiking trail at the bottom of the hill. I was almost ready to turn around and then I saw this view.

The new scenery of my run was hugely invigorating. I had a smile on my face seeing all of the people out on a Sunday afternoon hiking the trails. The scenery was amazing.

When was the last time you found a new running route? Ever surprised yourself into some gorgeous scenery?
