Race Recap – just living vicariously through my kid

My son ran our local 4th of July 5K last week. After all the preparation from his track meet last month, he was excited about the race. Except that summer schedule has now set in meaning no more PE running, soccer season has ended and he hasn’t done much running in the past 3 weeks. But, he was still excited.

At least if I couldn’t be out there running, it was fun to be there and feel the energy of a race. And then I get a race recap to share with all of you.

Dude did great! He was out there by himself (he said he saw lots of people he knew while out there). He had a goal in his head to finish in under 30 minutes as his first timed race, he finished in just over 31 minutes. He was pretty confident that he could keep a 9:30ish pace.

And he did!

Well, sort of.

Because he’s 11, and he can be a little goofy, he decided to stop the Garmin two separate times when he stopped to tie his shoe.

He considers his time 29:32 (9:25 pace) as that’s what showed on the watch, but his official time was 31:25 (10:06 pace). He was 59 out of 102 in his age group. Can I just say how awesome it is that there were 102 boys ages 9-12 who ran the race! So awesome.

Evidently, it takes 1:57 to stop twice to tie your shoe. Maybe we need to work on the speed of the shoe tying skills. Although I’m sure he used the break to catch his breath a tiny bit, too. Maybe we’ll get him some of those slide up clip things so he doesn’t have to worry about shoe laces coming undone.

I got a great picture of him coming down the finishing shoot. He was working hard!

After he cooled down, he chattered non-stop about every little detail of the race and who he saw and what he did. Evidently, he looked at the watch every 3 steps, I think. Oops, starting a bad habit pretty young. But, he was so excited and proud of his effort. His enthusiasm was awesome!

He had a great time and is looking forward to joining the Running Club at his middle school in the fall. They run a few miles once a week after school.

I also saw my speedy friend and Ragnar Teammate Gillian who took a break from studying for the Bar exam next month to absolutely crush the race, taking 3rd place in her age group with a 20:41 finish!

It was a great kick off to the holiday.

And an update on my medical trainwreck – I’m doing much better. The holiday weekend messed with getting my bloodwork back from the lab, but I’ve now had 2 doctors say that I likely won’t need to be on the blood thinners for very long, hopefully the blood work results will confirm that. And, while I’m released from my boot on my right foot (the original injury), I do still have discomfort. It just seems like such a stupid thing. There’s one spot that shows on the MRI as bright white – it’s the 2nd metatarsal joint that is inflamed. Nothing glamorous, just a pain in a joint that gets used with every single step that I take. Ugh. I’m going to go back to my chiropractor for some ART to help with the inflammation and I’m also doing some stretching on my own, but it’s just annoying.

I went for a really short walk the other day on my lunch as I’m starting to go crazy without exercise. Getting out was awesome, but I can tell that my foot is not 100%. I do feel it getting better with the stretching and I’m hopeful that the pad in my shoe will continue to alleviate some of the pressure when I walk.

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!
