Kiehl’s Aromatic Blends Fig Leaf & Sage Fragrant Body Spray

I love scents. I may not blog about them often but I do love my fragrances and have pretty much been a perfume lover since I was a teen. From cheap and cheerful to expensive and niche, I have tried or at least sniffed quite a good array of scents over the years. However, I find my taste has evolved as I erm,… grew older and I tend to seek relatively unisex scents in the last few years or so.

I was perusing Kiehl’s a few months back to take a closer look at the fragrances on display. I vaguely remembered the launch of the fragrance line they call Aromatic Blends back in 2012 as I think I received a periodical or email about it. The first one that caught my eye was Fig Leaf & Sage. It sounded herbal and woodsy, the sort of scent I find attractive.

The simple and unfussy bottle also played a part to this purchase. I dislike those strange bottles with bits and bobs sticking out or the multi-faceted types that feel uncomfortable to hold. So the packaging may seem boring to most but I adore its minimal lines. The spray nozzle disperses the scent evenly and doesn’t get clogged.

The notes are a blend of Bergamot, Citron, Thyme, Fig, Fig Leaf and Sage (according to basenotes.net). I don’t really get much of the citrus but I do detect a woody fig and a herbal sage with a hint of dusty coconut. The coconut is not described in basenotes.net but that’s what my nose picks up. It’s just a hint though.

It’s not sweet or floral as I think the fragrance is targeted as a “unisex” scent that should smell pleasant to a man and on a man. I haven’t tried spritzing this on le hubby as he has pretty much stuck to Dior’s Eau Sauvage ever since I got him his first bottle when we started dating (20 years ago… yikes!). Fig Leaf & Sage is the most masculine in the Aromatic Blends range without the typical aqua or strong citrus that seem to dominate the male fragrance market these days.

Compared to Diptyque Philosykos, which is also a prominent fig and creamy coconut blend, the Kiehl’s version is more straight-forward and dry. The base notes are more herbaceous due to the sage and thyme and I love how this dries down on me. I get a whiff of figs and herbs at the end of the day.

I find Fig Leaf & Sage to be quite a grown-up scent but it is definitely something that you need to smell in person before buying. I always recommend testing out fragrances first because our preferences will vary and how a scent reacts on a person’s body chemistry can be different. For example, I do not wear fruity scents very well as they tend to turn a tad bit acrid on me, but many of my female friends can carry off fruits and they smell lovely.

I was given the accompanying Liquid Body Cleanser as a gift with purchase and have enjoyed using it too. The scent is similar to the body spray but just a bit milkier. The cleanser (or shower gel) is actually quite nice. It leaves my skin feeling cleansed yet soft and doesn’t seem to strip my skin dry. If I hadn’t stocked up the the L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil, I would have gotten a full sized bottle to add to my shower time rotation.

Overall, the Aromatic Blends and Fig Leaf & Sage in particular is a big hit with me. I purchased the small 30ml bottle but am definitely going back for the 100ml when this is used up. Another bonus is that the fragrances are relatively affordable. The 30ml bottle costs RM80 and the 100ml costs RM190.

Have you tried any of Kiehl’s fragrances and which of the Aromatic Blends do you favour? Do leave your comments below even if it is to let me know what you’re wearing today (doesn’t have to be Kiehl’s).
