Trendy Makeup: BB Cushion

Lately, a ton of Korean beauty bloggers/vloggers have been using something called “BB cushion”. I first heard about this type of product from sunnydahye. It’s basically a compact with a sponge soaked with liquid BB cream. It might sound strange at first but I think it’s a great concept because you can take it on the go and it’s very travel-friendly. I don’t think it would count as a “liquid” on flights…. but don’t take my word for it. Inside the compact, there’s a special sponge for application. Instead of applying the product using a wiping motion, you are supposed to pat it on so that it provides the best coverage. All of them contain SPF. The biggest downside is that there are usually not that many shades available for Asian cosmetic products.

Currently, most of these products are only available in Asia and you’d need to find them online if you live in the U.S. like me. But as some of you might have already heard, the popular Korean cosmetic brand, Laneige, is now available exclusively at Target! I’m very excited because I heard lots of great things about this brand and I’ll definitely try out some of their products very soon. Right now, the products are only available online at target.com and the selection is quite small. But they will be available at selected stores around April. Some of the prices are better at Target than Asian cosmetics online retailers.

Side story: For those of you who have seen the Korean drama, You From the Stars, actress Jun Ji Hyun was often seen wearing vibrant lip colors. I heard that some of the lipsticks she used is the Laneige Serum Intense Lipstick.

Anyways, back to BB cushions. The following brands have been releasing this type of product for a while now and here’s what I’ve gathered from watching/reading reviews:

Laneige BB Cushion ($34): medium coverage; comes with a refill; SPF50 PA

Mamonde Real Skin Founder ($27.99): medium-full coverage; foundation powder hybrid; SPF33 PA

Innisfree Mineral Melting Foundation ($28.99): buildable light to medium coverage; SPF32 PA

Espoir Face Slip Nude Cushion ($44.99): light coverage; comes with a refill; SPF50 PA

Etude House Precious Mineral Any Cushion ($19.99): medium-full coverage; SPF50 PA

This morning, I saw a promotional email from Clinique and they made a CC cream compact! There are 6 shades available. Based on the picture online, it doesn’t seem like it’s CC cream soaked in a sponge. It looks more like a cream foundation. I have yet to see it in person so it’s hard to judge. I personally really like the Clinique CC Cream because it provides good coverage and does a great job of color correcting my skin tone.
