Chalk Monkey CrossFit

In 2013 I spent the entire year visiting different CrossFit gyms. Each place had their own set of pros and cons but in order for me to be consistent with CrossFit I needed to find a new home base. One of the most important things I take into consideration is who the trainers are and the community of the box. Then I look at location, times of classes and price. Most boxes will give you a free class or two to help you see if it’s a good fit for you.

When I was hopping around from gym to gym I realized that they each have their own programs. The muscle groups that were worked on yesterday may be the very thing the next box is working on today. That can easily lead to over using a muscle group and bad form etc.,

Chalk Monkey Crossfit is owned and operated by some awesome folks that I go to church with every Sunday. The box is literally 5 minutes away, the class time is right after kid drop off and the price is within range of what I was already paying. I tried my two classes before Christmas and I felt really comfortable there and the trainers there focus on good form.

It really helped that another friend and member of our church wanted to try it out. We both went and made the decision to give it real try. It’s so funny that she was a bit scared at first. Most people are scared but once they try it they either really love it or don’t ever want to do it again.

If you are curious about this new gym there is a new photo album on my Fan Page of Chalk Monkey CrossFit. This particular gym is home to a couple of really good photographers.

Those were captured during a Saturday partner workout. I thought they turned out really well and you can see more of their images on their Facebook Fan Page. It helps that they understand what I do and aren’t bothered by my logging of workouts or check-ins and social media updates.

Nothing will replace my time with my coach or old gym but it can be a new beginning for me. I’m sure I will still drop in to visit old friends. I’m starting over this year but I’m ok with that because I know what consistency can do for me. If you are in the Pasadena area feel free to check it out!

From my Linkedin inbox: “Oh, and would a slightly pudgy dad die if he tried to do cross-fit?”

NO! I promise you will not die if you tried to do CrossFit. My recommendations are to find two to three boxes near you. They should offer a free class to try out. Go at the time that would work for your workout routine. Your first workout should be tailored for a new person. The majority of the boxes shouldn’t just throw you in but have a new member workout.

One of the most important things that has happened for me is developing a stronger mind than I already had. I’m amazed at what I can do and I feel my best when I’m working on me. It also helps me keep up with my kids! Whether you do CrossFit or any other exercise routine taking care of yourself makes you a better parent all around. Remember you are a role model. Best of luck and keep me posted on how your journey goes. If you have any questions let me know, I’m happy to help.
