Shake It Off

Damn you, Taylor Swift. Damn you for making such a catchy song. Damn you for making me enjoy your music even though I generally detest your personality.

If you haven’t heard Swift’s latest single,

“Shake it Off”, you need to do so ASAP. It’s pure pop perfection. I dislike 90% of what is on mainstream radio currently, but I will not deny my love for a well-written pop song. In fact, the song has taken over my brain so much that it created me to write this blog post. From the catchy chorus to the way it makes you literally start dancing in your seat, “Shake it Off” can’t be beat.

The song focuses on all of the negative things that the public has said about Swift. This includes, but is not limited to, how she’s dated half of Hollywood, is a dumb blonde, and is an awkward dancer. Yet instead of whining about it, she’s making fun of herself for it. She’s acknowledging what the media thinks about her and how you can’t let it get to you.

I feel you, girl. Whether it’s the girl who continues to tell mutual friends I’m a bitch or the anonymous online commenter who told me I had a big nose, I feel you Taylor. No matter how successful, famous or amazing you are (Swift is successful and famous, not me obviously), there will always be people who are going to say nasty things about you. So what do you do? Just “shake it off”, of course.

There’s something liberating about being able to throw your middle finger in the air or laugh off a back-handed compliment, and I applaud Swift for making it acceptable for a “good girl” to do so. Dare I say that this makes me like her a little bit more?
