Glittery Egyptian Inspired Art Project

A Golden & Glittery Art Project for Exploring Egpyt!

We’ve been exploring Ancient Egypt in our homeschool lately. The kids are fascinated with the history of the pyramids and mummies. And this art teacher mama LOVES the graphic lines and golden embellishments of the Egyptian art. So I thought it would be fun to have the kids do an art project that was all glittery and Egyptian-inspired. Honestly, I’m not usually a glitter fan; but since I was invited to try out the Swiffer Sweep & Trap, I was up for the messy challenge. Here’s what we did…

An Egyptian Inspired Kids Art Project

Supplies:

• Examples of Ancient Egyptian Art and Egyptian themed Children’s Books
• black construction paper
• ruler
• pencil and/or eraser
• Crayola Gel Markers (or other gel markers that work on dark paper)
• white school glue
• gold glitter

Steps:

First, we looked at and analyzed some Ancient Egyptian Art and read a few Egyptian themed Children’s Books (like Pepi and The Secret Names). We noticed the use of line, borders, symbols, black, and gold.

I used a ruler and pencil to make a border on the black construction paper. Then the kids started with a pencil to draw whatever design they would like. Priscilla chose not-so-Egyptian hearts (which is perfect okay!), but Sawyer drew a Mummy.

After the pencil drawing the kids used their new Crayola Gel Markers to add color to their art projects. They love how the gel markers go on and then magically show up brighter as the marks dry on the paper. So fun!

After the drawing was all done, I helped the kids add glue outlines to where they wanted the golden glitter. And then the glittery fun and mess began; shake, shake!

After the glitter was on, and excess shaken off, we set our Egyptian Inspired Art Project aside to dry.

And I got to work with my new Swiffer Sweep & Trap cleaning up our glittery mess. I’ve always been a Swiffer fan, so I was excited to see how this new dry cleaning sweeper worked. It has cool rotating blades to pick up large stuff and flick it into a dirt bin while the an attached dry cloth traps the little stuff – like our glitter.

Honestly – I’ve never used glitter at home or in my art teaching days when there wasn’t some stray glitter left behind. But I was actually really impressed that the Swiffer Sweep & Trap picked up the majority of it in a few easy sweeps. I think there’ll be another glittery art project in our future!
