The Concept of Fate

The words and sentences we speak, hear and think are an integral part of who we become. Certain phrases, snippets of sentences, quotes and singular words have remained with me from the first encounter onwards. I wanted to pay homage to one of Germany’s greatest artists and her incredible lyrics that have accompanied me throughout the most challenging and also greatest moments of my life so far.

Hildegard Knef’s “Für mich soll’s rote Rosen regnen” contains two lines in which she appeals to luck, asking it to handle her fate gently and with love: “Das Glück sollte sich sanft verhalten, es soll mein Schicksal mit Liebe verwalten”. I can’t fully express how much courage and joie de vivre her lyrics have given me in dire times and this tattoo will serve as a gentle reminder of the chaotic beauty that is life itself.

This is the second tattoo I had done, both at Laura Cherrygrove‘s tattoo studio, the first one being a word, “Zataba”, that Dennis, Lea and I invented, which all three of us have tattood on our wrist.

Ever since I remember I have contemplated whether our fate is in our hands or only partially or maybe not even at all. I’m curious what your viewpoint on that is.
