A cultural legacy……

It’s culture, it’s community, it’s women. And it has me fascinated. Decorated mud houses in Burkini Faso is what. Found in a circular village called Tiebele, in west Africa, is home to one of the oldest ethnic groups. There, lies amazing traditional Gourounsi architecture and elaborately decorated walls.

This is a culturally rich village and wall decorating is a part of their cultural legacy. The homes are made of earth, wood and straw, they have small openings to let in sunlight, but no windows. Once constructed, the women paint murals, inspired from beliefs or everyday life using coloured mud and white chalk. I love the thought of bringing this into my home, one wall at a time…
