I get asked quite often what color my hair is and where I get it done. Confession time? I have no idea what color it is and I do it myself at home when I have time. That is until lately. See, I have this thing. If I can do it myself for less money and not a whole lot of effort, I will. I can’t justify spending upwards of $80 every 6 weeks (probably shorter than that for me, my hair grows like a weed) on hair color. Specially when I can do my hair color at home for something like $30 and get what is, IMO, the same results.
I have read some beauty bloggers say that they wouldn’t recommend this. I honestly don’t see why not! Except, wait, there are some exceptions. If you do a weave or multiple colored highlights, you might want to get those professionally. But if you’re getting all over color, covering grey, or even mixing colors I say heck, I can do that! I thought I’d share with you my most recent hair color at home project!
Usually I buy my hair color at Sally’s Beauty Supply or the local drugstore. At Sally’s you get the developer & the color, that’s it. No gloves, no bigger bottle, but hair cream. Which is fine if you have this at home (we actually do). The drugstore brands usually come with the developer, color, cheap plastic gloves, and I think shampoo and conditioner, if I remember correctly. I’ve never been a fan of included shampoo & conditioners, just sayin.
This time I tried an online brand - Madison Reed. I had never heard of them, but they wanted me to give it a try, so I thought heck, why not? I’m not crazy particular with my hair and it’s been all sorts of colors before. The site is professional and they have a little quiz that suggests hair colors to you after you’ve taken it.
I’m hooked. I don’t think I’ll ever use the other stuff again. Here’s what I loved.
Their site is so cute and has a ton of resources. You can even text or e-mail a selfie to one of the Madison Reed colorist for a consultation. Can’t get that from a drug store!! Here’s a step by step of how I colored my hair at home with Madison Reed.
The only thing I missed is to add an extra bottle for long thick hair. The single bottle wasn’t enough for all my hair. It’s a small box that you need to mark when you choose the color. Here’s my end result!
I’m really happy with it! You can get 20% OFF your first purchase at Madison-Reed.com using the code SUMMERLOVE if you want to try it out. In my opinion, it’s as close as you’ll get to a salon when using an at home system.
And you know what’s super cool? You can sign up to have it delivered however often you color your hair – every 4 weeks, 6 weeks, etc. – so it just shows up at your door when the time has come to freshen up your color! No more making hair appointments! I’m going to sign up for this for sure because I always forget to go buy my color. Heck, I always forget what color I used!
So what do you think? Would you color your hair at home? Or do you think I’m crazy?
