CHICAGO NEWS

♦ Northern Trust Bank has announced that 200 jobs will be cut. Crains reports that Chicago’s largest locally headquartered bank said the layoffs, along with other cost actions, would trim $25 million from its annual expenses. Executives said the cuts were coming from a wide array of operations within the bank and would take place over the coming year.

NATIONAL NEWS

♦ Like a scene from the movie “The Town” violent bank robbery occurred Wednesday in Stockton, California leaving two gunmen and a female hostage dead. The three armed robbers shot 14 police cars, three hostages and an undetermined number of homes during a one-hour police chase through three cities.

♦Microsoft announced that 18,000 jobs will be “eliminated” from the company in the coming year as well as news from CEO Satya Nadella that Nokia devices will no longer support Android. The Nokia Devices and Services team will be integrated and that Microsoft will be focusing on “breakthrough innovation” for future handsets.

♦ Drake hosted ESPN’s The Espys, which aired live on the network and some of the award winners included: Michael Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, UFC star Ronda Rousey won best female athlete, Oklahoma Thunder’s Kevin Durant won best male athlete. The Seattle Seahawks won for best team.
