Why You Should Follow Beauty Blogs

Beauty Blogs vs Beauty Mags

The beauty landscape is changing. I love it. As a beauty blogger I feel like I am part of a movement that is redefining what beautiful is to an all encompassing word, and not some exclusionary definition reserved for the top 5 percent that excludes women over 25, women with big noses, women of color, women who aren’t tall, women who aren’t hourglasses, etc. You get the idea. The mainstream beauty industry has such a narrow focus of what is pretty that it leaves the vast majority of women (who are damn beautiful) out in the cold. No more.

I am 36, so I grew up having only magazines and TV to learn about anything beauty or fashion related. I have curly hair, I’m Latina, I have a big nose, and you bet not a single page had a woman who looked like me. Trying to find my beauty was hard (and honestly still a struggle at times to think of myself as beautiful), and I am happy that my daughter is coming of age at a time when beauty blogs abound to show her just how many of us the word beautiful encompasses.

Beauty bloggers (and bloggers in general) are getting a lot of heat right now. The industry doesn’t like us. I can see why. We bring a relatable honesty that they can’t. We have a duty to ourselves and our readers, magazines have a duty to their advertisers. We have the FTC making strict rules to make sure we disclose any product that was sent by PR, paid to review, paid to talk about, etc. You can make informed decisions when you read our blogs. Magazines? They don’t tell you any of this.

We’re not airbrushed perfection, we’re real people just like you. We’re trying to find what makes us feel good about ourselves, just like you. We’re not playing on your insecurities to sell you $75 face cream. Beauty magazines aren’t changing, and until they do we need beauty blogs because we need to see real people who are proudly doing their thing.
