Crossbar Files New Liquor License Transfer Application

The next chapter for Crossbar der Beirgarten begins as the proposed German beer garden from the Ryleigh’s Restaurant Group has applied to transfer the liquor license from 1015-1019 S. Charles St., the former Banjara/The Hill/Joey B’s, to its property at 18 E. Cross St.

The second proposal for Crossbar was approved by the Board of Liquor License Commissioners for Baltimore City (BLLC) in February. However, the BLLC determined in a September hearing that the liquor license had expired, the third time the validity of license was challenged by the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association (FHNA).

Representatives from Crossbar told SouthBMore.com they are appealing that decision and expect to have the license returned when the appeal is heard in the spring, but that they did not want to wait on that decision to further delay the opening of Crossbar.

Earlier this year, Crossbar and the South Baltimore Neighborhood Association (SBNA), which shares the proposed location with FHNA, were able to reach a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a 155-person restaurant with a 50/50 food requirement, as well as concessions on the wall height and operating hours of the patio. This plan also received a letter of support from the Federal Hill South Neighborhood Association (FHSNA) and an email of support from Ottterbein and Sharp-Leadenhall.

FHNA did not come to an agreement with Crossbar and also voted at that time to challenge the validity of the liquor license.

Work at Crossbar has been underway since September with construction on the roof of the beer garden slated to begin soon. The restaurant group also recently purchased a barn in the area and will use wood from there for the tables at Crossbar.

Crossbar is anticipating a February opening. The same restaurant group will also be opening its Mt. Vernon location of Ryleigh’s Oyster next Tuesday.

The space at 1015-1019 S. Charles St., which was most recently Joey B’s, currently has a sign in the window that reads “Coming Soon, Mediterranean Cuisine.” That space will no longer have a liquor license.
