Movie Review: Chances Are 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray

Available today for the first time on Blu-ray is the romantic comedy Chances Are, staring Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan O’Neal and Mary Stuart Masterson. It’s the 25th Anniversary Edition too. I can’t believe this movie came out 25 years ago.

Chances Are is a romantic story about a forever love that transcends time.

Corinne (Cybil Shepard) and Louie Jeffries are madly in love with each other, to the envy of everyone around them. They were the perfect couple.

Tragedy strikes and Louie is accidently killed. His soul is sent to heaven where he waits to be sent back to Earth as someone else.

When the time comes for Louie to be reborn an angel forgets to inject him with a special formula that will destroy every memory Louie has. The angel hopes that it won’t be a problem in the future. Louie is reborn and named Alex (Robert Downey Jr.).

Flash forward 20 years. Louie’s path crosses with a beautiful young girl name Miranda (Mary Stuart Masterson). They are smitten with each other until Alex (Louie) meets Miranda’s mother, Corinne. Suddenly his memories come pouring back and Alex realized that he’s Louie – Corinne’s late husband and to his surprise, Miranda’s father. Alex also learns that his best friend (Ryan O’Neil) is in love with Corinne.

Alex wants Corinne to know who he is, without freaking her out. He wants their love to pick up where it left off. At the same time he has to fight off Miranda who has a big crush on him and stop his best friend from wooing his wife.

Will Alex be able to convince Corinne that he’s really Louie? Will Corinne believe him or will she think he’s crazy or up to no good? What about his best friend and daughter? Will they believe that he’s really Louie? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Chance Are, available today on Blu-ray.

This is a very sweet and heart warming film. All of the actors did a superb job. I really fell for the and the situation. On one hand you want Alex/Louie to get back with the love of his life, Corinne. But at the same time 20 years have gone by and she’s moved on and found a new love with his best friend. Plus it would make things awkward for their daughter.

I couldn’t imagine losing the love of my life and then have him re-appear decades later. It blows my mind just thinking about it.

The transfer to Blu-ray is excellent. The sound and picture quality couldn’t be any better. The only thing that is lacking are bonus features. I would have loved to have seen some behind the scenes stuff, bloopers or maybe interviews with the actors about working on the film and how they feel about it 25 years later.

The film is rated PG. There are only some inuendos of Alex and Corinne wanting to fool around. There is no sex or nudity. I honestly don’t remember any foul language either (then again I could have missed something – I wasn’t necessarily looking for it).

I enjoyed this film the same today as I did 25 years ago.
