Movie Review: A Haunted House 2

I love horror movies. I also love comedies. It’s great when the two genres can come together into one movie. Such is the case with the film A Haunted House 2.

I never saw the original film, A Haunted House, but that is OK. You don’t need to see the first film in order to understand what is going on with the second film.

A Haunted House 2 stars Marlon Wayans, Jamie Pressly, Gabriel Ingesias and Cedric the Entertainer.

The Wayans brothers are the masterminds behind movie such as the Scary Movie franchise, White Chicks and Little Man. A Haunted House 2 is a lot like Scary Movie where they spoof popular horror movies in a comedic way.

A Haunted House 2 spoofs the films Sinister, The Conjuring, Paranormal Activity and The Possession. There is possibly another movie spoofed as well but I can’t think of the title. For the records I’ve seen all the movies this movie makes fun of.

In A Haunted House 2, Malcolm Johnson (Marlon Wayans) and his wife Megan (Jamie Pressly) move into a new home with Megan’s children from another relationship – daughter Becky and son Wyatt.

They should have taken it as a bad omen when Malcom’s dog is killed. From that point on a lot of weird things happen. Becky finds a mysterious box in the basement and won’t part with it. Wyatt has an imaginary friend. Megan finds the scariest looking doll you’ve ever seen named Abigail in the wardrobe and Malcom finds tapes in the attic of real life murders.

Strange things keep happening and Malcom is convinced that there is an evil presence in the house. No one in his family believes him.

With each passing day things get more macabre including Becky’s room filled with moths and the creepy doll Abigail stalking Malcom.

Since no one believes him Malcom has to take it upon himself to rid the demon from his home. Will he succeed? To find out you need to pick up a copy of A Haunted House 2 now available where most movies are sold.

Normally I like movies with the Wayans brother in it. I have seen the first few Scary Movies and enjoyed them. I did not see the first Haunted House film so I didn’t know what to expect with this one.

This film is funny. I did find myself laughing throughout the film. A lot of times it had to do with Marlon Wayans and his expressions and actions. Even Jamie Pressly did a good job making me laugh, which I was surprised by.

This is NOT a family friendly movie. I would not allow my 17 or 15 year olds to watch this movie.

The movie IS funny, but it’s also filled with an abundance of sex (graphic), nudity, gross humor, drugs and alcohol. There is even an instance where someone literally blows their head off by inserting a gun into their mouth and pulling the trigger. These are things I did not find funny. In fact one section of the movie I fast forward through. It was where Malcom was having graphic sex with the creepy doll Abigail – and I do mean graphic.

I think the movie could have done without all the sex. I’m far from a prude. I just didn’t think it was necessary. I could have done without all of the graphic stuff. The film makers could have alluded to the fact that he had sex with the doll instead of graphically displaying it.

The film did make light of racist things. For example, Malcom’s new neighbor Migel (Gabriel Ingesias) is Mexican. They utilized as many cliche Mexican racist remarks as possible. Maybe some people find it funny, but I didn’t think it was necessary.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a funny movie if you can overlook the other stuff (graphic sex, nudity, drugs, alcohol…). I really believe that Marlon Wayans totally makes the film.

There are just a few deleted scenes featured in the bonus feature section as well as commentary (I didn’t check out the commentary).
