What makes a family?

I work in Family Court at our local court house. I see all different kinds of families come through our doors – single parent homes, families with two moms or two dads, families of mixed races, families where the grandparents or other relatives are raising children. Families come in all different shapes, sizes and set ups. You don’t even need to be blood relatives to be a family.

I was raised by my paternal grandparents. As far as I’m concerned they are my mom and dad and no one can tell me otherwise (I do have a great relationship with my biological father and my stepmother).

The Boxtrolls, which opens in theaters on Friday (September 27, 2014), is a good example of what makes a family.

The Boxtrolls are cute little trolls that live under a town. When they happen upon an orphaned baby they decide to take the child in and raise him as their own, even though they are not human and the baby is not a troll.

The Boxtrolls are all that the boy knows and as far as he’s concerned they are his family.

Check out this featurette for the film.

This looks like a really funny film. It’s also a “family friendly” film which means young and old alike will enjoy it.

The film opens in theaters on Friday. If you would like to purchase tickets in advance you can do so here on Fandango – http://www.fandango.com/theboxtrolls_163451/movietimes.

There is also a Twitter party on September 26, 2014 where you could win $500!
