DIY : Reupholster a Vintage Bar Stool

Today I'll show you a very simple and quick DIY: how to reupholster a vintage bar stool.

Aujourd'hui je vais vous montrer un petit DIY ultra simple et rapide : comment recouvrir un tabouret de bar vintage.

When you have a small budget to decorate your home, one solution is to buy used or vintage items. This is what I often do because you can make great deals like those bar stools that I found on ebay. It was really a bargain since I bought a set of four stools for 40 €. Yes you read it right 40 €! Because I have a little space I only could kept two of them. So I sold a pair of these stools for 45 €. If you do the math, at the end they didn't cost me anything and in addition I earned 5 €! In short, all that to say that I highly recommend you to have a look at all these beautiful retro objects because not only they add a unique touch to any decor but you can also make great deals. Anyway, the topic of the day is to show you how I renovated these bar stools. As you can see they were originally covered with a black faux leather. To make them a little more feminine and glamorous, I decided to cover them with white leather and here is how I did.

Lorsqu'on a un petit budget pour sa décoration, une des solutions est de se tourner vers les objets d'occasions ou vintages. C'est ce que je fais souvent car on peut faire de belles trouvailles comme ces tabourets de bar que j'ai pu trouver sur ebay. J'ai vraiment fait une véritable affaire puisque j'ai acheté un lot de quatre tabourets pour 40€. Oui vous avez bien lu 40€ ! Ayant peu d'espace je n'en ai gardé que deux. J'ai donc revendu une paire pour 45€. Si vous faites le calcul, ces tabourets ne m'ont rien coûté et j'ai en plus gagné 5€ ! Bref, tout ça pour dire que je vous conseille vivement de jeter un œil à tous ces beaux objets rétros car en plus d'ajouter une touche unique à votre décoration vous pouvez réellement tomber sur de belles occasions. Toujours est-il que le sujet du jour est de vous montrer comment j'ai rénové ces tabourets de bar. Comme vous pouvez le voir ils étaient à l'origine en simili cuir noir. Pour leur donner un côté un peu plus féminin et glamour, j'ai décidé de les recouvrir de cuir blanc et voici comment j'ai fait.

I first removed the seat of the stool. Usually the seats are very easy to remove as they are fixed with simple screw.

J'ai tout d'abord retiré l'assise des tabourets. En général les assises sont très faciles à enlever car elles sont fixées avec de simples vis.

Then, as you can see in the picture the leatherette had a rigid and thick seam around the edge. To make them more rounded I just cut this contour using large scissors.

Ensuite, comme vous pouvez le voir sur la photo le simili cuir avait une couture rigide et épaisse sur le pourtour. Pour avoir un côté plus arrondi j'ai simplement découpé cette bordure à l'aide de grands ciseaux.

To cover them, as I have told you I chose a very beautiful white leather. To cut it I put the seats on it and used them as a template.

Pour les recouvrir, comme je vous l'ai dit j'ai choisi un magnifique cuir blanc. J'ai déposé les assises sur le cuir pour pouvoir délimiter la surface à découper.

For the fabric or leather that you will choose to cover your stools, be sure to make a margin at least 5 cm all around to make it easier to staple. To staple, you have to start first by the corners to stretch your fabric properly, by which as pictured above you have to tension your fabric on all four sides.

Pour le tissu ou cuir que vous choisirez pour recouvrir vos tabourets, veillez bien à laisser au minimum 5cm de marge tout autour pour pouvoir agrafer plus facilement. Pour agrafer, commencer par bien fixer votre tissu en l'agrafant d'abord à chaque angle ou si vous préférez comme sur la photo, en le tendant bien sur les quatre côtés.

Then I kept on stapling all around and I cut the excess leather. Finally, I reattached the seats to the stools with the original screws.

J'ai ensuite continué à agrafer tout autour puis j'ai découpé l'excédent de cuir. Pour finir, j'ai refixé l'assise sur le tabouret avec les vis d'origine.

And now here are my new vintage leather bar stools.

Et voilà mes nouveaux tabourets de bar vintages en cuir.
