The Fabulous Stains: Jessi Jae Joplin

As we dive deeper into festival season, we want to talk about all-things rave! Each day this week, contributor Nicky Ottav will hit up a member of L.A.-based fashion collective/cyber cool kids club The Fabulous Stains and ask ‘em to dish on their best fest tips.

Jessi Jae Joplin is the creator/founder of The Fabulous Stains fashion blog and the lead singer of the L.A-based pop/rock band The Ruckus (and a great friend of mine!). When Jessi isn’t blogging or playing shows, she models and styles photoshoots. Jessi also contributes to Buzznet, E! Online, and The Pulp Zine. I caught up with Jessi to get the lowdown on her favorite festival moments.

Hi, Jessi! As a boy, I’m interested in what being a Nasty Gal means to you.

Being a Nasty Gal, to me, is being someone who’s not afraid to be who they are. Someone who is unapologetic about straying from the norm and expressing themselves—whether it be through their fashion or lifestyle.

How long have you been going to festivals and concerts? Do you have a favorite memory from a particular show?

I’ve been going to festivals for about the past six years now—my favorites being Coachella, Lollapalooza, SXSW, Electric Daisy Carnival, Lightning in a Bottle, Outside Lands, Treasure Island and Burning Man. One of my most favorite memories was seeing Paul McCartney perform live at Coachella.

As a musician, what would be your dream festival to perform at and why?

My dream music festival to perform at would be Glastonbury Festival in the UK because—not only do I have a huge fascination with Europe—but this festival seems to be the ultimate!

What are your festival essentials?

I always make sure to bring a personal fan (it can get really hot, especially in the desert), blotting powder for my face, a camera to document the fun experience, comfortable (and tall) platform shoes, cute sunglasses, and a backpack/fanny pack/some sort of purse that you don’t have to physically hold on to.

Any trend predictions for this upcoming festival season?

I think people, including myself, are moving further away from the bohemian, flower crown, 1970s-inspired “Penny Lane” festival look and venturing a lot more towards the vibes of ’90s Sporty Spice and Gwen Stefani from early No Doubt.

Most festivals go from day to night. Any tips on how to change up your look mid-way through the festival?

It can get cold at night, so a super cute jacket in the evening is definitely necessary. Also, ditching the sunglasses and hat and sporting a cute up-do. A darker lipstick can also help.
