Tutorial Tuesday – Whipped Body Butter!

Once again, I am providing you with pictures from an actual tutorial that I did. Myself. I know, I know, control yourselves. Also, don’t get too used to it.

Anyway, for a while I’ve been wanting to try to make my own lotion. It all started when I’d go to get a massage and if I got aromatherapy, they’d give you the rest of the oil mixed into a lotion. It was heavenly! And then I shook my head (at myself) because I realized I could just make my own lotion with essential oils. Ha-doyoyoyoyoy. So…I finally got around to doing it.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 c. shea butter (I got mine from Better Shea Butter)
  • 1/2 c. coconut oil
  • 1/2 c. olive oil (you can use jojoba oil or almond oil)
  • Essential oils

STEPS

1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. Since I don’t really cook, I didn’t have a double boiler (or a Pyrex bowl for that matter), so I used a ceramic bowl which worked fine. It did take a bit longer to melt everything. Mr. Internet said it was fine to use a ceramic bowl, but I’m giving a disclaimer now that if ceramic does explode under high heat conditions, it’s on you. Maybe I was playing Russian cooking roulette. What do I know. (I’d make the worst attorney).

2. After everything has melted, remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes. Add the olive oil and however much essential oil you’d like. I seriously put about 30 drops of lavender and 10 drops of ylang ylang and it’s still not scenty enough for me.

3. Put the oil in the refrigerator until it has all solidified. Yes, that is my fingerprint in the center.

4. With hand mixer, whip until you reach your desired consistency (just pretend there’s a picture of me mixing that all up). It really only take a minute or two. Then spoon into your container.

That’s it! Aside from all the cooling time, it was super quick and easy to make. And a little really goes a long way!
