Don’t Forget About ME

Tears in my eyes..
You know sometimes, it’d be like that baby

We were bigger than anything
Remember us at our best

I bet she can’t do like me
She’ll never be MC

And when I say “MC”, I really mean DV As I sit here on this chilly weekend drinking my last can of rootbeer (I only had two…), I am trying to compare the pros and cons of moving to Seoul. If you gave 21 year old Doris the chance to move to Seoul back when she first arrived in Daejeon, she would pack her 50 bags of hot cheetos and be on the next KTX in a heartbeat. Currently, 24 year old Doris still loves Seoul, but has grown overly attached to the little humans she has been teaching at Chungdahm April since late 2010. She’s also attached to her spacious officetel.

But aside from the awesome little humans & the awesome officetel, work life has not been so dandy. I haven’t been fully happy with my job as of late & there’s no denying it. No job is perfect, but this is the kind of unhappiness that can’t really be fixed by just staying in one place. The direction(s) my school is heading towards is just questionable. Leadership is shitty – miscommunication after miscommunication. The lack of competence on their part takes a toll on my opportunity to learn and grow as an instructor. At the end of the day, April has reached its plateau. Since mid 2012, it’s been on a downward spiraling track and what kills me the most is that they are continuing to accept this low standard of leadership and management. All the hard work I’ve put into this place is just irrelevant because of the shitshow that is taking center stage. So at this point, I think it’s time to throw my hands up in defeat as well. I’ve done what I can here, I’ve put my best effort towards maintaining quality and raising the bar. And it’s about time I work with people who not only can help me, but have higher standards and morals themselves.

In the words of another Mariah Carey song, April will “always be my baby.” But you gotta let ‘em go. So thank you Mariah Carey for your great life-affirming songs. And thank you Chungdahm April for the past 3 years… well thank you for the first 1.5 years… the last 1.5 years, screw you. I need to sort myself out. And I hope 2014 will be a great year filled with hard work, new experiences, and more creative freedom.
