DIY Dinosaur Fossils

Hi friends! I’m participating with some of my favorite crafty friends this week to bring you super easy Camp Crafts for kids! So if you don’t know – I’m a mom of boys. And those boys are WAY into dinosaurs. Everyday. Dinosaurs. So I’ve recently looked into finding fun and new resources and crafts we could make that would fuel this love. I really love that they’ve found something they can dive into and learn more about. My oldest prides himself on being able to identify a large number of dinos – and I think it’s just the cutest. So a few weeks ago when we were reviewing dino activities on Zoobean, we decided to make some DIY Dinosaur Fossils!

The DIY Dinosaur Fossils are easy peasy to make. Basically you’ll just mix up some staples you likely already have in your pantry! Just a few minutes and you’re ready to “stamp” those fossils! Just bake, cool and you’re ready to go. Here are the specifics…

What you’ll need:

  • Dinosaur toys
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 3/4 cup of water

And the steps:

  1. Mix together flour, salt, and water to make the clay. Add more water if necessary to achieve a dough consistency.
  2. Divide clay into pads, flattening each with your hand.
  3. Press dinosaur feet and bodies into the clay.
  4. Bake the clay at 350 degrees for one hour to “fossilize”.
  5. Allow fossils to cool before handling.

AJ had so much fun making the DIY Dinosaur Fossils and we had a fun discussion of how this is how we find dinosaurs now – when they used to look like his toys way back when! Let us know if you give them a try!
