Review: Meze 66 Classics | Wooden Headphones?

Disclaimer: Items provided for review

Yes, you read the title correctly, wooden headphones! When Meze wrote to me asking if I wanted to try out their headphones, that was the first thing that caught my eye; the second being that they were exactly like the headphones I used to wear in my old videos.

When they first arrived I was really quite shocked at how light they were, for some reason I expected them to feel quite heavy

For how light they are, they’re remarkably tough. I dragged them around with me to Brighton several times stuffed between my computer, charger and and microphone and they were fine. The earphones rotate so I could fold them up or lie them down flat.

A few years ago everyone seemed to be using the Beats by Dr Dre headphones and people were saying the sound was so much better. I’ve only ever used cheap headphones so you can imagine how interested I was to see if the sound was that much better. They really were! Listening to

Human Legacy with these was quite amazing, I could really hear all the different layers in the song.

Basics:

  • €119 = £98
  • Detachable cable
  • Satin Finish
  • Gold Plated Plug
  • Foldable Headband
  • Comes with spare cable

So, lets go through my pros and negatives. Starting off with pros, they’re incredibly handy for traveling and surprisingly tough. I tried to be pretty rough with them to see how they would last, and they held up so well, though I would recommend detaching the wire if you’re carrying it around in your bag to avoid the risk of them snagging and getting bent.

So now for the cons. To be fair I was sent the smaller headphones, they have larger sizes, so it seems a little unfair to say it would have been nicer to have headphones which were a little larger. They fit well over my ears, but just as a personal preference I prefer them to slot around my ears rather than on them a little.

I think the price will be a stumbling block for a few people, €119 (£98) is a lot to to spend on headphones

It really depends on what you’re intending to get out of them. If you’re one of those people who aren’t really bothered by the sound quality then I don’t think these would be appreciated much. For me personally, provided they’re long lasting, I think they’re worth the money. They made a huge difference to me when I was recording the rough demo’s for the Fenix album!

I’m tempted to give these another review in a few months, for the moment I’ve had them for about 2-3 months and love them, but I’ve verry interested to see how long they’ll last. Overall verdict, love them, but how long they last really determins for me if they’re worth the money. So far I would say they are (the sound quality is amazing) but I’ll check back in a few months with an update.
