Burt’s Bees Lip Balm: Review

I tweeted about my new-found love of Burt’s Bees Lip Balm * the other day and thought it would be good to do a little over-view of the selection I have and which are the stand out ones for me. I am one of those people who pretty much always has chapped lips, along with very dry hands and dehydrated skin… it’s a joy. But it basically take a lot to make my lips/hands/face not on the dehydrated side – including drinking gallons of water. But, that being said there are two products from the Burt’s Bees Lip Balm range that have really impressed me recently.

From the pictures you can see, it looks a bit like there’s a split between the flavoured/coloured/intense ones and that’s sort of true – except the ones that look like they should be tinted actually aren’t. There’s the pink, reddish and purple topped balms on the left in the photo- these are the ‘Refreshing’ (pink), ‘Rejuvinating’ (purple) and ‘Replenishing’ (reddish) – of these three it’s actually only the Replenishing that has a tint to it. The other two are normal transluscent balms. But both are flavoured/scented – with the Rejuvenating with Acai Berry and Refreshing with Pink Grapefruit.

Then on the right in the photo is another trio- we have the ‘Revitalising’ (blue), ‘Nourishing’ (orange) and Honey (brown). The Revitalising one looks like it might be a minty one on my first impressions but this is actually blueberry and dark chocolate scented/flavoured – yum! It really does smell good enough to eat. The Nourishing variant has mango butter so smells fruity and sweet and then the honey one (shockingly) smells of honey. This is probably my least favourite of the bunch as I find that sometimes I just don’t love the scent of honey – somtimes I adore it, but other times I can feel it has a bit of a funny note/scent to it that I just don’t like as much.

Then lastly there are the stars of the show – the silver topped stick-balm and liquid-balm, both intensive versions of the Burt’s Bees Lip Balm offering. One being Ultra Moisturising (liquid) and one Ultra Conditioning (the stick), then next to them is the original little tin of Burt’s Bees Lip Balm – my favourite thing about the original is the light peppermint scent. I’m a sucker for anything minty. The two total stars for me are as you have probably guessed the two intensive (silver) versions – both of these feel amazing on first use, like lips are instantly smoother and softer and more hydrated. I actually used the Ultra Moisturising (liquid) one as a bit of lip-prep when I was wearing a bright lip the other day – applying a thick layer and then using an old toothbrush to give lips a bit of a gentle exfoliation and remove any dry bits. My lips felt fab afterwards and this is the one that is now sitting on my desk to remind me to apply daily.

Other than the two silver ones being my favourites, my other picks would be purely down to scent/flavour – I really like the Pink Grapefruit ‘Refreshing’ one and the Acai Berry ‘Rejuvenating’ balm. Overall, these balms are a simple but effective – and choice basically comes down to flavours you like, or if you need a more intense moisture hit!
