How Does She Do it All?

As many of you know, this past summer I had the privilege to attend Alt Summit Conference. This is a professional blogging conference where people talk about…well…blogging. I know, I know…how exciting. But guess who our keynote speaker was this year?

Gosh you’re good! It was none other than the queen herself – Ms. Martha Stewart. And honestly? I felt she was the highlight of the conference. She was funny charismatic sincere professional…pretty much perfection wrapped up in one gorgeous Burberry sweater. Total woman crush.

Well, it was Q&A time and this one chick raises her hand and asks the lamest question ever, “I don’t get it…how do you DO it all? I mean, you do everything!! How do you do it?!”

Martha paused and looked at her for a moment before responding simple, “I have an entire company to do things.”

Aaaaaaannnndddd right then I just smiled. Why? Because even freakin’ Martha Stewart isn’t trying to keep up some delusion that she does everything. So why do so many women try to give that impression now days?

Let me back up here…

So lately I’ve been receiving a few emails from readers asking a similar question. Essentially, they ask “How do you do it all?” My reply is always the same, “Um, I don’t?”

And no…unlike Martha I do not have an “entire company” to do things for me. I must pick and choose how to spend my time and honestly something has to give. Here are some examples of things that didn’t make the cut in the Marionberry Style household:

– My beloved Barefoot Contessa (I’ve always been obsessed with her and secretly wish my husband and I could double date with her and Jeffrey and eat chicken together) has always been a huge proponent of making your own chicken stock. Ummmmm, no. Not happening over here.

- I suck a fat one at the following tasks: cleaning toilets, laundry, doing my nails, organization, folding anything, dishes, and all musical instruments. Oh, and dancing. Suck-city.

- I don’t always get to write a blog post every day. If Cooper is determined to skip his nap (such a naughty boy) that means I am with him during the time I have set aside for writing my blog post. I refuse to give up my husband or Cooper time…so it sometimes has to give. That was the case this week and the reason I missed posting yesterday. Daylight Savings time made a deal with toddlers everywhere to cause mischief and skip nap times.

So this post is just a reminder that I don’t do it all. I try to focus on a few things and do them well…while only sucking at a couple of things. I have many talents (cooking, unassisted pull-ups, this thing I can do with my lower lip, quoting poetry, etc.) but in no way am I that woman who “does it all!” Gosh…even Martha admitted that SHE is not that woman…which makes it TOTALLY reasonable to conclude that no such woman exists.

And that is perfectly ok with me! Because let’s be honest, how boring would that beotch be?!!
