Romantic Bali Destination Wedding

You probably already guessed from the engagement session prior, but this Bali wedding has got style like you wouldn’t believe. It’s every destination bride’s dreams brought to life and Cher Ange and Gloriosa Flower House are just a few of the talented vendors responsible for the day. The always fabulous Jemma Keech shared her snaps of the day, and let me assure you the gallery doesn’t disappoint.

From the Bride… Antoine and I got engaged on Christmas Eve 2012, we knew from the very beginning that we wanted –no, needed – a destination wedding. Ours is one of those classic relationships that blossom out of expatriate life. Antoine is Swiss, I am Chinese-Australian and our life together began in Beijing. We have family and friends scattered the world over. An intimate wedding in Bali held with it all the promise of romance and idyllic island beauty. We were aware of the fact that most of our guests would have to travel, regardless of where we held our wedding – so we hoped the choice of Bali would enable them to enjoy a relaxing holiday, as well as honoring us with their presence.

There were times when we doubted our choice to go with a destination wedding, planned almost entirely by email and Skype. In the year leading up to the wedding, we left China to start a new chapter in Singapore. In the midst of packing and unpacking myriad boxes, hunting for apartments, visiting our cat Daisy in quarantine and starting new jobs in a new city, we seriously wondered whether we were mad to be planning a wedding a thousand miles away from where we were. The task was further complicated by our particular requirements. We were looking for a location in Bali that didn’t look too traditional, nor too modern. We wanted a romantic, enchanted garden aesthetic that was ‘dreamy’, ‘magical’, ‘organic’, ‘vintage elements but not rustic”, “like walking into A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream” – all words we threw at our long-suffering wedding planner, Karen, and florist Herni, that I suspected were less than useful in providing direction.

On our first planning trip – with six months to go until the wedding – we visited eight villas and resorts in two days, and none felt like the one. We flew back to Singapore despondent. We were ready to put down a deposit on our second choice location, when I came across photographs of the Amanusa, shot by the exceptional Jemma Keech (who, in the end, also photographed our wedding). In the time it took me to scroll through half a dozen photographs, I fell in love. It had a kind of restrained grandeur that I just knew would fuse beautifully with the vision I’d conjured in my head for our décor and florals. I got on the phone, our date was miraculously available, I consulted with Karen and we booked it then and there, sight unseen. I’d like to think it was simply meant to be.

With the Amanusa, we really had the most extraordinary foundation to work with. After the garden ceremony, our guests enjoyed champagne and canapés at the elevated bar, overlooking sunset views of the Indian Ocean and the Mount Agung volcano in the distance. Our reception dinner was held under the frangipani trees on the lawn. The evening was lit up with twinkling lights, hundreds of candles and the sparkling stars above. It was our greatest wish that our nearest and dearest could come together and celebrate the happiest day of our lives, and to also leave with magical memories of their own. I think we managed to succeed on that front, as several of our guests and family members have been asking when the next Bali celebration will be! An anniversary soiree, perhaps?
