Men Sella met and drew: Virgil Moreno (25)

Meet Sella Molenaar, successful illustrator and the latest addition to the Jan Marcel team. After working for big brands like H&M, Moët and Hennessy and Supertrash, she will draw one well-dressed man for JanMarcel.com every single month, with whom she also has a short interview.

“I always feel attracted to and inspired by the ones that stand out in the crowd and love to draw these intriguing figures I meet in my daily life. Every month I will share some of my little encounters with inspiring and stylish men.”

Last Sunday I met choreographer and dancer Virgil Moreno at the L’Oréal Culture Crash hair show at the Taets Gallery in Zaandam. I was doing some live illustration on stage for ‘Kinki Kappers’ and he was the man who put the entire show together for them. His extravagant and energetic persona struck my eye as well as the light and silky blouse that was dancing around his body as he moved through the room in his heavy leather boots. This guy was definitely a head turner! I made a quick sketch of him while he was rehearsing and sat down with Virgil to have a little chat.

Profile

Name: Virgil Moreno
Age: 25
Residence: Rotterdam
Profession: Choreographer & dancer

I have seen you jumping and dancing around all day, what do you do for a living?

“I am a professional commercial dancer, but my biggest passion is choreography. I dance in television shows and on huge events in the Amsterdam Arena, but it is in my own productions that I can fully express myself and my creativity.”

What are you wearing?

“I am wearing a top by Dair design, the label of my good friend Odair Pereira. It is actually a piece designed for women, but I do not care about those kind of restrictions in fashion and just wear what I like.”

Do you have a favourite brand?

“I think brands are unimportant. For me, to go off the beaten track and dress the way you feel is way more significant. Whether this is in designer clothes, vintage, H&M or a mixture of them all, does not really matter. I cannot pin myself down to one brand or style.”

Do you go crazy sometimes?

“Yes! I am not afraid to stand out or try something new. If I feel like wearing women’s clothing, bold prints or even see-through sheer fabrics, I will. Not a lot of guys would do that.”

As a dancer, is the freedom to move around important when it comes down to dressing yourself?

“Of course comfort is important, but it is not leading. I will not stop wearing skinny jeans because I cannot do a split in them on stage.”

If you had to choose: black and white or colour?

“That is a hard one! I would go for all white. Or as I call it: ‘all angelic’.”

Any advice for men who are not blessed with your sense of style?

“Please be more adventurous! The way most Dutch guys dress is very uninspiring. They copy what the mannequin in the store is wearing or think that if they buy expensive clothes with a big brand printed on it, it is cool. That has nothing to do with style or creativity! I would love to see more men who dare to be different and think and dress outside the box.”
