Friday Round-Up: What Matters

And now we are almost in June. What?!

While it means the end-of-the-school year and summer, it also means that I need to start thinking about training for the San Francisco 1st Half Marathon in July. Yup, my cousin convinced me to sign up for this race almost a year ago.

I foresee a lot of hill training in my future. In fact, my coach Jess at Race Pace Wellness has already started with the hill repeats. Oddly, I kind of enjoy them. I’m excited to work with Jess again but more importantly, I’m excited to be running again. Post-NYC Half hip/knee/plantar fasciitis pain have gone away (knock on wood!!).

It’s been a few weeks since my last Friday Round-Up. I missed sharing some of the great things I’ve read during the week but to be honest, I haven’t been doing my reading lately! I admit, I may have had to hit All Read on my reader a few times…

But here are some of my favorites from the past few weeks. P.S. I also regularly share great reads on Twitter so follow me there too!

Staying Hidden
Over the long weekend, I was mostly off-line. But on Monday night, I found myself reading the #yesallwomen hashtag that emerged following the shootings in Santa Barbara and that was trending on Twitter over the weekend. It’s probably one of the important conversations going on. This piece from Tracy at Sellabit Mum really hit home and is something that I think that many of us, especially those of us who run, can relate to.

A healthy baby is not ALL that matters
I was a little hesitant as I clicked through on this article but I’m so glad that I did. Yes, absolutely having a healthy baby is the most important but this article makes a great point that it’s not all that matters. The mother and the woman matter too. I had a hard time after giving birth to my oldest son (a case of the baby blues) and I think that this article articulates many of the confusing and conflicting feelings I experienced.

Top 12: A Runner’s Advice for Writers
My friend Kim, who is also New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia

, ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon a few weekends ago. She shared this reflection about how running is like writing a novel. I love how we can take the lessons from running and apply them to just about any area of our life.

3-Dimensional Exercises to Correct Tight Hip Flexors
This is a great post from Amanda at Run to the Finish. Ever since the NYC Half, my hip flexors have been super tight. Add in hours sitting in front of a computer and my hip flexors are angry. Amanda outlines some great stretches to increase mobility and correct tight hip flexors. I know that they’re great because I’ve been doing them almost daily for the past two months. Amanda worked with folks at Finish Line Physical Therapy which also happens to be my PT facility!

Look Up, It’s Good For You
I love the message of Kierston’s post. Lately, I’ve been noticing more and more my tendency (as well as other’s) to have our face buried in our smartphones and computers and other devices.

5 Steps to a Delicious Smoothie
Smoothie fan? Then you want to check out my post for Athleta. I’m sharing five tips on how to make a delicious smoothie PLUS you have a chance to win a $50 gift card! They’re giving away 8 of them. All you have to do is comment with your favorite smoothie recipe.

Are you running the SF Marathon or Half Marathon? Are you a fan of hill repeats? Favorite reads from this week?
