2014 New York City Marathon aka the Best Day of the Year

NYC Marathon brought lots of folks into town.

I don’t remember when I first started spectating the New York City Marathon. For three years or so, I used to live right at Columbus Circle, near the finish line in Central Park, but I never went to watch the race. It always seemed like it was super crowded and more trouble than it was worth.

When we moved to our place in Brooklyn, it’s hard not to cheer during the marathon. We practically live on the marathon route along the long stretch of 4th Avenue.

Now, I love spectating this race. In fact, it’s my favorite day of the year in New York City and the 2014 New York City Marathon didn’t disappoint.

1. I love that it feels like the entire city comes out to cheer on the runners as they run through all five boroughs of the city. Having run the New York City Marathon once in 2003, the vibe throughout the city in incredible. At the same time, it captures the distinct character of each neighborhood.

2. I love that my kids get into the spirit every year. We track the pro runners on TV and then anxiously await for them to arrive in our neighborhood.

3. I love that Everett was so seriously about cheering and ringing his cowbell this year. He kept telling me to “Focus Mommy!” when I wasn’t cheering up to his standards.

4. I love the wide range of runners who commit to this race and pour their hearts (and legs and lungs) out on the streets to reach the finish line, especially in the brutally cold and windy conditions during this year’s race.

Kara Goucher

Deena Kastor

5. I love the stories behind the runners. I mean, just the stories behind the pro athletes like Meb and Kara and Deena are amazing, but the every runner out there on marathon day has a story.

6. I love that you get to watch world class athletes running through your neighborhood, literally in front of your nose.

Five Borough Challenge Runners

7. I love that I have incredible friends who run this race to support their friends, like Michele guiding her friend John who is legally blind. John represented Staten Island in the Five Borough Challenge and came in second!

Re-enacting Kipsang-Desisa finish of the NYC Marathon

8. I love that my kids wanted to re-enact the men’s finish of the 2014 New York City Marathon between Wilson Kipsang and Lelisa Desisa over and over again. They would take turns bumping into each other and then the other would surge ahead to finish line.

LOVED meeting Ari from Ari’s Menu in person!

9. I love that the marathon brings so many friends into the city and gives me a chance to meet up with bloggers who have become real-life friends. And when you get Bloggers/Instagramers/Tweeters together in one place, you’ll get some epic selfies.

I love Marathon Day. Every year, it leaves my heart so so full and my eyes teary. It renews my love for New York City. It even leaves me thinking fondly back at my own marathon experiences…and I quickly have to remind myself that no, I don’t want to train for and run another marathon!

So while I’m not committing to run another marathon, this did happen over the weekend…

Let’s just say that I’ve rediscovered my love of running.

I was only supposed to run one half marathon this year. That was my goal. Instead, I’ve run 2 half marathons and a relay race and apparently, I’m getting ready to run my 3rd half of the year. I just hope that it’s not as cold and windy as it was in NYC over the weekend!
