Confessions of a scattered mom

If you read this blog you probably wonder how I sew so much and manage to care for a house, kids, four dogs, chickens, a garden and all the other stuff that that entails.

A lot of people tell me they want to learn to sew but can’t. “Why not?” I ask them?

“Because I don’t have time”

Last time I checked I’m living in the same twenty four hour a day world they are, and I manage to. But how? Well, for one thing, my house is a mess.

I let a lot of my other chores around the house go by the wayside when I’m obsessed with a project. I need to change. I”m doing the “fun stuff’ and ignoring the important but tedious things that make a home run smoothly. In short , I act like a teenager myself. Set mealtimes and house cleaning schedules? Never tried it. I consider the week a success if I can manage to get the kids to school without a tardy. I need to set a better example for my kids.

I need to get more organized, plan weekly dinners, and make sure my kids do their chores around the house. I need some sort of schedule to manage it all.

Because my poor husband shouldn’t come back after a super long drive from his office in the city and find that there is no dinner ready and that we need to go out for Mexican food again.

Today I bought a book to help me get my act together. It’s called “Cleaning House”. It’s written by a mom who was a procrastinator herself and was tired of her kids not helping. She wanted to change their lives and teach her kids the value of work. As I started reading the book I had a LIGHTBULB moment. This is what I need to do, too! The author of the book, Lisa Clark is also the author of the MOAT blog., a blog about raising tweens and teens responsibly, which I plan to read tonight after I get the kids to bed at a decent hour. Speaking of which, I also need to implement consistent bedtime routines.

I may be slowing down on the sewing to try to change my habits. I’ll still be making stuff, but I’m hoping to find more balance. After all, kids can’t raise themselves.

Do any of you other creative types battle with your scattered unorganized, spur of the moment ways like I do?

What I’d love to know is, do you have any cleaning and organizing blogs or books you would recommend for me to read? Or any simple words of advice for an overwhelmed mom?

Thanks dear readers!
