How Healthy is Your Money Story?

We all have a story that make us who we are, be that a story we have about our bodies, about the food we eat, or about our relationships with ourselves or others. It’s our own personal narrative on life, and when it comes to money, we’re no different.

Each of us has a money story, and for most of us, that story is outdated, inherited and in need of some serious editing. I discovered my own money story when I was diagnosed with cancer. I always knew that I had ‘issues’ with money, but I never realized the extent of the unconscious implications my money story held, until I got sick.

Having been a yoga teacher for over 15 years, I was quite accustomed to looking at my life from all angles. I was the first person to ask my students why they thought things in their life were falling apart, or what their illness might be trying to teach them. So when I got sick I had to ask myself the same questions. I kept pondering what the energetic implications of my illness were.

Honestly though, I spent three months in shock, during which time I didn’t ask myself anything. After months struggling with treatment and complications, I was eventually able to entertain what my illness meant during my recovery process, and slowly I came out on the other side of it all, where I found the clarity I needed to move forward.

And boy did I move forward!

I went from being a broke-ass yoga teacher to earning more in four days than I had the entire year before.

Getting clear on the money story that I had Inherited, one in which I had to be sick in order for it to play itself out, was the first step in being able to re-write my story – and ultimately my life. I realized that I had inherited that story from my mother who has been sick my whole life.

I learned that being sick was my way of looking to others to do for me, what I believed I was unable to do for myself.

It doesn’t matter how much money you earn, or how much you have saved, we all have a story when it comes to money. For some of us it’s a story that says we need to save for a rainy day. For others money is about power. Some hold being debt-free as their ultimate goal. The truth is, our relationship to money reveals a lot about who we are, and who we’re not.

We invest money with all sorts of emotion, but in reality, money is just a tool. It’s the thing that allows us to have everything else that we desire in life, whether that’s the freedom to spend more time with loved ones, to buy the clothes we love and which make us feel confident and good about ourselves. It can allow us to travel the world, to furnish our life with the things that truly nourish us and ultimately to live the lives we dream of.

Many of us though, have a relationship to money that looks and feels more like a series of one-night stands. We feel a lack of commitment towards our money dreams, and as a result, the money we desire isn’t there for us. We get stuck in limiting beliefs like that of the starving artist or that it’s not spiritual to want to make money. We often equate poverty with integrity and make money bad because we’re filled with anger, jealousy and resentment towards those that have the money we desire.

If you want to know how healthy your money story is, all you have to do is pay attention to how you talk about money, and how it feels when you do. If you think of money as a dear old friend, the kind that you’re always happy to see, it’s more likely to make itself present in your life.

I know when I was broke; I dreaded the end of the month. I was always scrambling to pay the rent and trying to figure out how I could stagger my bills so I had enough to pay them all. I remember when I first transformed my money story and I was finally earning the kind of money I wanted and needed, to live the life I dreamed of. The first of the month came and went and I forgot to pay my rent – because it was the first time ever in my life that I wasn’t stressed out about not having enough money to pay it!

What’s your money story about?

Think back to your first experience of money. Who was it with, and was it a story of saving or spending money?

When you think of money, does it make you anxious, happy, excited or tense?

And lastly, if you could earn any amount of money every month, consistently and easily with joy, how much would you like to earn? Notice if you temper your desire with a justification rooted in your inherited money story that says something like, ‘that’s not possible’ or ‘don’t be greedy’.

Money really does grow on tress, even though you may have been told something different. Money, after all, is just paper that is printed with numbers, which we invest with value. Money is a renewable resource and you’re having any amount that you desire, does not mean that someone else has to do without.

I’d love to hear about your money story in the comments below. Share your story with us and let’s re-write our stories together.

Want to know the secret of how I went from being sick and broke, to living a life of joy, ease and abundance?

Here it is –

  1. I got super clear about what it was that I really, really, wanted out of life and I set an intention be available for nothing BUT, that reality.
  2. I took baby steps every single day towards my goal, even though my circumstances and surroundings reflected back to me a reality that I did not yet match my chosen reality/intention.
  3. I invested in a coach to hold me accountable to my intention and the life I desired.
