Easy DIY Moisturizing Hair Mask

The more I DIY things in my home, the more I realize there are thing I can DIY in my everyday life as well. That’s why I started making my own natural cleaners and things like my DIY Body Butter and Peppermint Lip Scrub. So a while back when I ran out of my favorite $30 a bottle conditioner I decided it was time to stop paying an arm and a leg for hair conditioner and figure out a new, natural way to deep condition my dry, brittle hair. (I’m never give up my flat iron, sorry!)

I tried a few recipes I found online and wasn’t super happy with the results. One left chunks of banana in my hair that were a super huge pain to get out, another left me shiny but in an I-just-bathed-in-olive-oil kindof greasy way. Fun times. Finally I found the perfect combination for me and of course had to share it with you. The best part as always-super simple and inexpensive.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp Organic Coconut Oil
1/2 ripe avocado
1 egg

If you don’t have coconut oil already at home, seriously you should probably run to the store right now and grab some. I’ll wait right here for you to get back.

Seriously.

Coconut oil is my new favorite thing…I’ve always kept it on hand for things like cooking granola but last year I realized it was my new best friend and I use for everything from moisturizing my skin (it is surprisingly NOT greasy once absorbed) to making lip balm to dissolving my essential oils.

Okay, now that you realize coconut oil (make sure it’s pure, unrefined, and organic!) is a necessary part of life, the hair mask.

Simply blend the ingredients either in a blender or with a potato masher until uniform. Rub a little in your hands at a time (the coconut oil melts as soon as it warms up so this will thin the mask out) and work through your hair, especially at the ends.

Let it sit in your hair about 15 minutes and then wash and rinse as usual. Your hair will dry shiny and soft! I’ve been doing this about every two week and it’s fantastic for me as I only trim my hair twice a year and my ends can get pretty dull!

If you have a dry scalp or {gasp} dandruff as well (I totally get this from time to time-hate it!) I like to do an extra step prior to putting the hair mask on, I take about a teaspoon of coconut oil and add 3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 6 Drops of Melaleuca Oil (also known as Tea Tree Oil) and rub that into my scalp before doing my hair mask. it usually clears it right up in one treatment. Using just the Lavender Oil in coconut oil also clears up the chronic cradle cap my youngest son gets!!

Do you have a favorite homemade hair treatment? If so I’d love to hear it!
