One motive almost every sporty lady has in mind when shopping is versatility. That being said, when faced with a small shopping budget, keep in mind that high performance clothing for hiking (you know, the threads you can only buy at outdoor apparel stores) isn't always necessary, or the best value, for working out outside—inexpensive, sweat-wicking options made for the gym can work just as well on the trail. The same philosophy goes for sports bras and shells, too—unless you're backpacking or going on really strenuous adventures. So here are some of my picks for a bright and sweaty spring, whether you're playing outside or in:

Lime green mesh shorts: TARGET, $12.99, target.com; Adidas jacket, similar by NORTH FACE at REI, $65, rei.com; Yellow and Grey: similar by NIKE, $27.97, nike.com.
A thin waterproof shell looks crisp and clean with your gym outfit but actually provides quality protection from wind and water. Layer some mesh running shorts under a pair of hiking pants for transition months—you might appreciate the quick cool off after a warm weather ascent. I love spandex shorts for warming days rock climbing since there's no accidental "peek-a-boos" for your belay partner.

C9 by Champion Women's Cami Sports Bra: TARGET, $14.99, target.com; Leggings: Similar by ASICS at REI, $52, rei.com.
Spandex leggings are a great option for mountain biking since they won't get caught in your bike chain, and they are cheap enough that you won't mind getting them muddy.

Unlike colder months when you need wool socks, cotton actually cools off your feet on shorter hikes in the summer. Opt for a pair with "sweat-wicking" written on the packaging.
